  • Thickness of capacitor plates

    Hi

Can any help? The construction of a capacitor or laden jar always indicates the use of tinfoil or lead foil. The calculation of capacity of the cap is based upon the metal plate overlap area and not the thickness of the metal, although for the dielectric the thickness is important. The question is why use metal foil, why not a thicker metal plate?

    Any help much appreciated.

    Regards

    John

Because conductive foil is much easier to work with and it reduces weight and dimensions of condensers.

      Thanks

Thanks for that. I may have a go with some lead sheeting, at least it can be soldered.
