The lights DON'T stay on till midnight, they only work when the sun is out.
Then the midnight statement is completely misleading. This still wouldn't work well in the states as most houses have trusses and insulation.

Clear PVC pipe wrapped with tinfoil or flashing..... They work great in a shed, carport, or Garage with no power.

I guess this is a simple version of fiber optic lighting in Japan. Light is gathered with mirror and glass and transfered trough fiber glass to reach place far from the sunlight.

another idea -- solar panel water bottle

            Here is an idea.
One problem with solar panels is you have to create a complicated
sun tracker to keep the panels aligned and aiming at the sun
            through-out the day.

What if you were to instead mount the panels around a
LARGE cylinder filled with water. Let the top part of the
cylinder get exposed to lite, like these bottles, and the bottom
circumference be surrounded by solar panels.
The light would come into the cylinder, refract all over the place,
hitting each panel through-out the day.
            Nice!!!

Who says the sun is never out at midnight? The midnight statement isn't misleading. The sun can be out at midnight in certain locations of the world, which is known as the Midnight Sun. Lands of the Midnight Sun includes Alaska, Canada (Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut), Finland, Iceland, Lapland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Denmark (Greenland). Also, there are some instances which are sometimes referred to as "midnight sun", even though they are in reality due to meandering time zones and the observance of daylight saving time.
