Greetings All.
I'm wondering about electromagnetic coils. If I make an electromagnetic coil by winding 30 meters or 18 gauge magnet wire around a common bolt and then hook that up to a battery I get a very nice magnetic field that I can use to push a wheel around.
The questions I have are:
What is actually happening when I hook up the wires?
Are the electrons moving through the coil as in the "plumbing" analogy?
And if so, why can't I catch the electrons at the other end and reuse them?
Why do we loose those electrons? In the magnetic field? Where is the energy loss?
How can we recapture them or minimize losses?
Thank you for your consideration.
