      I just tried the shorting of a coil yesterday (third circuit i pic).
      I though the way i did it above was cool (second circuit in pic), but this is way cooler!
      I have never had a neon-lamp go purple in any of my setups before, be it a motor generator or solid state, but the shorting of a coil gives me purple flashes, not just steady orange.
      I just used my turntable, 8 small neodymiums, one coil, a reed-switch, a neon-lamp and then turned the rotor by hand and found a good spot for the reed-switch.
      Without the switching the coil gives about 6vac peak-to-peak if i turn the turntable as fast as i can (~200rpm).

      So simple and *really* cool!

        Here is a video, using only one coil thats being shorted:
