By the word "Great," Acton was not implying that such men truly are great men, but rather that such men are recognized, with a place in history texts, for their position of power and authority. Such men conveniently forget that the true purpose of their role is to humbly serve the true interests of the people - not to burden the People and beat them into submission.

It is amazing how 'prophetic' the founding fathers were; the perils of having political parties only being ONE example. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, 'we' seem to have succumbed to all the things they TRIED to guard against. The big weakness in the system SEEMS to be a reliance on 'the people' as the ultimate check; even IF this is a result of TPTB operating nefariously behind the scenes, 'WE', collectively, allowed this to happen.

So, has the system been 'corrupted', or was there an inherent weaknesss designed into the system, at the outset; this reliance on 'the people' and their 'collective wisdom', at the outset?

If someone falls 'victim' to one of these con e-mails from Africa, YES; the 'con artist' definetly bears responsibility for deliberately defrauding the victim.But, doesn't the victim bear SOME responsibility, for being greedy and expecting 'something for nothing'?

Our 'Representatives' have given us what we want; more and more Gov't services, while 'keeping taxes low'; what 'we' collectively want, which is something for nothing.

Gov't taking more and more responsibility for our lives, (if something bad happens), 'protecting' us from everything from foriegn threats to economic downturns, while (seeming to ) 'maintain' our liberties; again, we are 'expecting' something for nothing.

And yet, we STILL 'give' the incumbents an overwhelming advantage. In fact, the Tea Party is more of a threat to incumbency, than the opposing party, which is why neither party really likes or wants them; the very idea scares career Politicians, cause it might 'catch on'.

And, if 'organised' political parties are the problem, or a part of the problem, than having another one isn't the solution.

And yet, there is NO WAY 'we' are going to abolish the political parties, at this juncture. This is yet another 'problem' WE created for ourselves, and for which there really is no 'do-able' solution.Jim

An organization named Rethink911.org is making great headway towards educating the public that World Trade Center Building 7 fell on 9/11/2001 despite the fact that it was not hit by a plane and only suffered minor fire damage. When questioned, most people will say that they never realized that a third skyscraper building fell. Everyone knows that the twin towers both fell, but relatively few know about building 7. And far fewer understand the facts that there was definite foreknowledge it would fall, that it's fall was definitely a classic example of controlled demolition, and that over 2,000 architects and engineers say so. Rethink911.org has focused their educational efforts in several large cities, both in the US and Canada, and is using advertisement placards posted on top of taxicabs in Chicago, on the inside and outside of transit buses in Ottawa, and on billboards in several other cities. There is even a 54 foot high billboard posted in New York's Times Square. I applaud and support this great effort at waking people up.

There is so much media hype over the government shutdown, and the labeling of the House TEA Party caucus as "anarchists" who bear the fault for causing the shutdown of non-essential services. By definition alone, a non-essential government employee should not even have the job they are in, and quite likely the agency they work for is also non-essential agency that shouldn't exist.

Word is now that top Republicans are worrying about public backlash from all the media hype, and are thinking of further compromise. That would be a huge mistake. Instead of further compromising each time the Senate sends them a reworded demand, they should tack on something of significance to their original aim of defunding Obama. Something like also defunding the Department of Education, and then the Department of inJustice. That's the way to play the game - make it increasingly difficult for Congress to say no, and at some point they would have to give in to at least defunding one of the items the House demands. We'll see, after this all plays out, who the cowards and traitors are. We already know who they are in the Senate, and the TEA Party has vowed to go all out in finding and supporting candidates to oppose those traitors in 2014 primaries. The same will go for the House traitors who cave to Senate demands.

I both 'get it', and don't get it; it sems obvious to me, even going by lamestream media coverage, that O'bummer and Reid are the ones who are being intransigent, and refusing to compromise. So how is it that Repubs are getting the 'blame' for the Gov't shutdown?

The Obama administration and the US Senate (Dirty Harry Reid, in particular) have a strategy aimed at teeing off the public in hopes that the public will force the House to cave in on efforts to kill or delay ObummerCare.
Their strategy is to make as many people as possible ticked off about the current shutdowns and blame Republicans for these events.

A prime example is the shutting down of national parks. It makes no sense whatsoever to be shutting these areas down, because the people who visit these parks pay an admission fee which more than covers the cost of park operations, including pay of personnel employed at these parks. What's even more insane than simply closing the parks and sending employees home, is the hiring of guards to enforce the park shutdowns by erecting barriers, patrolling the grounds, and posting guards at all entrance and exit points, thereby costing taxpayer dollars rather than realizing any savings. Obviously the administration knew this would be the outcome, and that all it would accomplish is making people angry.

Here in Maine there are a great many parks open to the public, and thankfully most are state parks. We also have 8 National Wildlife Refuges normally open to the public, and world famous Acadia National Park near Bar Harbor. Acadia National Park has been closed, and folks who were inside and hiking, biking, horse riding, or camping out, were told they had to leave. You can bet that ticked off a lot of folks, because this is Acadia Park's busiest time of year due to the masses of people who visit to view the spectacular foliage which is currently about to reach its peak coloration. Besides the multitude of passenger cars normally entering the park each day at an admission fee of $20 per vehicle, there are a great many tour buses arriving. There are also about 3,000 passengers a day arriving on cruise ships where the main attraction is visiting Acadia Park. You can easily imagine how much income is lost at Acadia Park due to the shutdown, and that's just the beginning of the actual cost because scores of businesses in Bar Harbor, Winter Harbor, and other towns surrounding Acadia Park will suffer tremendously. And for what? All because of an unwarranted shutdown that will end up costing far more in lost federal government, state government, and business incomes than any savings realized from shutting the park down.

Multiply that by the total number of heavily visited national parks and monuments across the nation, and you see it affects a great many people who will have a lot of bad stuff to say about these shutdowns, and whoever they blame for causing this to happen. While we can easily see through it, and understand why Barry's administration employed this tactic, I just wonder how many of those who were affected really understand what's going on. One reason why the tactic may backfire, though, is that nearly all the folks who visit these national parks are hard working blue collar types who work hard, pay their taxes, and save to go on such outings. The throngs of Obummer supporters who fall into the category of welfare recipients are not your typical park visitors.

By the way, did you hear how World War II veterans arriving on tour buses and planning to visit the World War II Memorial at the National Mall in Washington were faced with barricades erected to stop them from entering their open-air memorial site? These are old-timers, of course, with most being in their 90's, and this is probably going to be their last opportunity to visit the memorial that was erected in their honor. Well, these old veterans didn't care for the barricades that were put up to keep them out, so they knocked them down, stormed the site, and took over the grounds.
Incredibly, instead of expressing regret for setting up the barricades, the administration had them put up again for veterans arriving the next day, but again this did not stop the veterans from doing what they came for.
