Recently, a major scientific breakthrough occurred in the stabilization and storage of anti-matter, a first step toward unlocking the door to the most powerful energy source currently known to man. In the coming age of directed-energy weapons, the implications for rearming and refueling are enormous.
One way of viewing antimatter is as matter going backwards
in time. However, that really only works on a microscopic
scale (a microscopic piece of matter which could be thought of
as annihilating with a piece of antimatter could also be thought
of as switching directions in time, with the same effects).

Unexpected Cloud of Antimatter off the Galactic Plane
Researchers from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and Northwestern University expected the maps to show a large cloud of antimatter near the galactic center and along the plane of the galaxy, caused by the explosions of young massive stars. The maps show this gamma ray activity, but surprisingly they also show a second cloud of antimatter well off the galactic plane.
"The origin of this new and unexpected source of antimatter is a mystery," said Dr.William R. Purcell, research scientist and assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Northwestern University.
Dr. James D. Kurfess, head of the Gamma and Cosmic Ray Astrophysics branch at NRL and OSSE principal investigator, noted that, "The antimatter cloud could have been formed by an ejection from a black hole at the galactic center, or from star bursts in the central region, or it could have been produced by an entirely different source."

“The newness here is that I want to use radiofrequency (and not magnetic fields like other experimental groups) to store the antiprotons,” said Hori. “The advantage is that the gadget can then be made quite compact, maybe the size of an office wastebasket.” Hori calls this new basket, the ‘superconducting radiofrequency quadrupole trap’.

Antimatter is not just of academic interest, because it has already been applied with great success in medical diagnosis in the PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scanner, which has saved many lives.
