Periodic Spontaneous Energy Discharging From Top Of Neodymium Magnet Into Ferro Fluid

YouTube - Periodic Spontaneous Energy Discharging From Top Of Neodymium Magnet Into Ferro Fluid

Setup: neodymium magnet on top of 2 microscope cover plates that have nanoparticle ferro fluid sandwiched between them. This is sitting on top of a microscope stage with the microscopes 12 volt 25 watt halogen light shining up through.

Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon?

I'll have to try that out.

      Loadstone,

That would be good to have this effect replicated.

A comment from the YouTube video suggested this:

In this 1970 book, Howard Johnson claims that a magnet can fire an energy burst several hundred times stronger than its base strength, again and again…

Do you have a pic of the setup in the light? Some sizes would help too, so I can make mine the same to compare.
I have a large microscope with 15w light, but not very large covers, just the usual slides and small square covers.

        Scotty.

          IndianaBoys!

We would be happy to replicate this for you, although a couple of questions?

What is the ferrofluid type? We have a few different ones and do want to do this as you indicate?

Also it appears you are using no magnification as the magnet would have to be very small to appear this small when on two cover slips?

Looking at the video it appears with every strike the fluid is becoming opaque and forming a primary mass? Please let us know and we can do this today.

            Hi Loadstone & Conrad,

            The FerroFluid is FerroTec EFH1

Was observing effects of ferrofluid/magnetic field under magnification when from the side the phenomena was noticed. So used a Canon Vixia HF200 to film it from the side. Placed the camcorder as close to the slide as possible. Used very little magnification as it would go out of focus if zoomed in.

Omano does not do the best job of identifying their scopes, but this looks like the one being used for this experiment:
Trinocular Compound Research Microscope, OM139, at Microscope.com

Under illumination section, they call volt 6 volt 30 watt, I had a replacement bulb with the scope that said 12 volt 25 watt. Not all bulbs produce the same phenomena.

You are correct, it is 2 cover slips and not a slide and cover slip. The neodymium magnet is small and I do not know the size as it got mixed with all the other magnets being worked with.

The condenser was adjusted to different heights which also effect the phenomena. Of note in the video, what is seen to be red is the ferro fluid sandwiched between the 2 slide covers. You see the energy discharging from the top of the neodymium magnet discharging and striking the edge of the denser ferrofluid pool. This action induced a rapid expansion of the denser fluid creating a bubble like effect. Heat from the lamp induced a highly responsive quality in the ferrofluid. Too much heat and you loose the effect from it discharging from the top of the magnet, you will get activity though mainly from the pole closest to the slide. The activity from the closest pole to the slide will come from the edge or closest to the center, difficult to observe.

Thanks for your help and looking forward to better understanding this phenomena!

This image should help calculate the dimensions of the magnet used:

This image also captures the energy discharge close to the end of a cycle.
This was around the 12 second mark in the video
Right of the center of the magnet is the beginning of a "whitish swoosh discharge" that flows to the right that is off to the side.

you maybe right, this needs to be reproduced, could you give us a step by step list to replicate it
