Where to get R60 welding rods in the UK

Anyone got any ideas. Its not the most popular thing on the internet - I so far have not found a spec for it - just wanted to know what was in it and why JB says its the best.

Any UK sources anyone knows about ?

R60 -rg60

Spent about a week looking into finding Lincoln R60 copper coated rods here in California. I contacted Lincoln distributors in my area. I was told by them that they preferred to order R60 rods from other suppliers because of cost. However, these rods are labeled RG60. Of these RG60 rods most are now all copper coated.

I found a few stores that carried these and went shopping. One the two stores that I went to was all out of the RG60 rods but with some digging they actually found a pound of R60 rod. Paid $6.00 for that and went to store number two.

Ironically, upon entering the store I walked right up to a rack of rod and found rod labeled R60. It was in the RG60 slot. The supplier is Blue Demon Welding Products. The rod is labeled R60 P/N: RG60-063-01T. Paid about $6.00 a pound for these.

Seems copper cladding is the thing (???). Thoughts on these ?

Hi

I use SIF Gas and TIG welding rods which are copper coated, SIFSTEEL No 11. Spec 1000mm, diameter 1.6mm, class EN12536 O1,BS 1453 A1, AWS A52 R45. Available from welding suppliers, I used Salop welding supplier in Shrewsbury, 01743 468902. Have not been able to find R60 in UK.

R60 rods

I don't believe there is any particular magic in Lincoln R60 rods. Essentially you are looking for a mild steel copper coated 1/16" rod (1.6mm) that is non-magnetic. These are available from almost any welding supplies outlet.

Ideally you need to leave these outside to rust a while.

Hobart welding rods

I was also looking for R60 rods at the store yesterday. They had Hobart brand instead of Lincoln. Some were copper coated, but they were thicker than 1/16
My question is: Would these thicker ones be okay for coil cores?

I'm using these in my first SSG, they seem to do the trick. They come in a 4kg pack so they'll also be used for all projects in the foreseeable future

Also, RS seem to have quite a lot of the parts I needed to build the SSG (in fact I think you could probably build one just using materials from their site) so I'd recommend looking about on their web site for some of the things I've seen people on forums having trouble finding I also have a few other engineering supplies etc web sites I came across so maybe we should make a topic to share all our sources to make it easier for everyone to get hold of things, and maybe organise it by country or something.

If it is steel, it will be magnetic (excepting some stainless steel). I think
there is an error here. Surely what is needed is iron, swedish soft iron.
Iron takes magnetism, but when the current is shut off, the magnetism
dies immediately.
