  • Using a PWM with a neon sign transformer ...

    Hi.

I've googled and can't find specifics.

I don't want to blow up my little PWM :

I want to use it in conjunction with a high-voltage supply (NST), how exactly do i connect them ?

    Thanks,

    Gary.

    PMW module.

    Hi Garry,

Nice little PWM module. I would suggest it would be wired up like in figure #4.
Maybe wire it up like fig #3 and drive something small like a ignition coil to play around with it with it first?
I'm unsure with what you exactly want to do here. If i'm thinking right, you want to drive the primary of the NST with the PWM? So you want to drive the primary with a 120v or so DC supply via the PMW unit?

    Yes- ok..

So I guess you'd make a DC supply of 120volts (maybe 240v, maybe variable) connect up to the PWM, like in fig#4 and connect then to the primary coil of the NST.

I gather you want to drive the NST at desired frequencies for resonance etc.. I think you'll find it will work up to certain frequencies, but I think a NST will struggle with high frequencies as it usually has a laminated iron core. But it should still be better that the mains 50 or 60cps. I would guess that it'll work well up to 3 or 5kcps, maybe more.. Good luck with it.

I'm doing a similar thing only with a high power audio amp and making my own step-up coils that will work on a much higher frequency.. Ie up to 200kcps.

P.s. how much $ for the PWM unit anyway?

Disclamer: I take no responsibility if you follow my advice and fry your PMW or electrocute yourself!! LOL.

    Cheers Mikey.

      Thanks Mikey.

I hadn't realised about the laminated core

Don't worry i won't sue you if it goes wrong

      It cost 42 pounds.

      Thanks again,

      Gary.
