can the cfl tube be substituted by a series of LEDs?
yes but the volts on this lightsaber unit can light 400+leds so use a christmas string 110volt at LEAST.!. or you will smoke them. I light 4 strings of them off a fugi mod right out of the package . and a homemade large ring i built will do the same .these are plugged in as the come from the package and the 20 are warm white . this one need more leds and will run 5 strings for 2 days off a c cell .so use a bunch . as far as lightsabers i dont know if it will ring or reguage with leds yet but i am running both right now off my modified replication .I know its off topic but if you want to build one i based mine off Jeannas light with some modifications . I use a small powerfull rare earth magnet magnet to throw it off frequency and then retune it with wire length .

Well, just couldn't get it out of my head so I took a short break from my other tasks and set up a very basic Joule thief circuit and replaced the standard 1k resistor with the " Lasersaber magic coil " and a single 1N34 diode. It's been running for 2 hours now and still going. I connected a meter to it to measure the current draw, it's running at an incredibly low .035ma draw. The LED isn't super bright but it's very noticable in daylight across the room. Absolutely amazing ! Thanks again LaserSaber for this incredible new discovery !
Well... back to work... playtime is over...

I posted this in the joulethief SEC exciter and variants thread but I think it belongs here also.
In this video I'm using a modified Slayer Exciter with Lasersaber's Joule Ringer.
The Exciter is not tuned right and will only dimly light the 4w FL tude for a few seconds.
It can light it up to full brightness but only for a split second.
But the Exciter will run for a long long time after the FL tube is out lighting led's.
@ Slayer
Glad that you got envolved with this. I look for Jonny Davro to show up also. People are starting to come from far and wide to try Lasersaber's circuit out.
I will try blending your exciter circuit into this and see what happens.
What I would really like to see is an exact replication of what LS showed in his second video----a small circuit board in the palm of my hand running a CFL on 10,000uf caps.
@Jetus
This will run with LEDs but the HV discharge inside the CFL may have something to do with the long run times. It is the long run time (low over all power consumption) that has my interest.
@Lasersaber
Many thanks for taking the time away from family to do this. I'm glad that your wife is OK with it and helps. Mine tolerates it but has no interest in it.
@ Gadget
Sorry to hear about your health. My dad is fighting cancer right now and my wife is cancer survivor. Hang in there.
@ All
The setup that I showed in my last video will run with just a base resistor but not as long as with the coil in there. A 5k pot worked pretty good.
Thank you lidmotor. Then i know how you must feel also . I had given up because chemo is killing me faster so i skipped a chemo and bought some of the not on the doctors list (he cant make money and says it will kill me ) MMS . well i feel better so screw the docs advice . he wants my money and has no idea how good i feel without goobs of poision i am taking . Ask your dad to try some . I believe it is helping me because i have some good energy and my mind is comming back .Things are different and i am not ready to go
Your like me i also love the aspect of running stuff lower than a volt for years and portability gadgets. that has always been the goal for me . we are more than half way now . if you get the time check out the reguaging of a ni metal battery . wow a fugi that runs for weeks or months on one little recharge is becoming realitly . Mine didnt drop at all running 16hours and that is so cool i had to put it away so i dont break it and enclose it neatly .I already started two more and waiting for 10 caps .One thing i found is that supercaps and ultracaps will not reguage ! it has to be a high resistance source . this is big no doubt

Its a real shame people try alternative stuff AFTER they already been on chemo. One dose of chemo sets you back at least 6 months as it destroys the immune system. I never been able to see the logic in it you might as well take a job working in Chernobyl as a cleaner then wonder why all your hair fell out and you feel like crap.
Anyway sorry to deviate off the thread there are other cancer threads here but please if you get sick there are other things you can do which have a 95% survival rate and yes MMS works as a major part of a recovery package.

My old man (dad for non english speakers) has had 2 massive cancerous lumps on his back (a strange variant that gets him into harley street!) and a triple heart bypass. all 3 times hes beaten the problem, and i swear its just through football. he plays it out. and it works! sport is the key.
sorry also to deviate off the fascinating thread. well done everyone for the leaps forward!
Anyone interested in the basic JT with the Lasersaber mod here is a circuit that I put together during a break. It's been running for 5 hours and counting....
The bifilar is a basic 2 wire bedini type coil ( 400 turns on this one ) and the primary is a typical toroid center tap as any ordinary JT.
Notice the LED is going back to the pos of the cap and not to ground.
There is no doubt in my mind that a small tuned crystal radio circuit could make this run almost indefinitely - as long as there was a reasonable signal coming in

Grea circuit. Thanks for posting the schematic. I was going to wait to see how long it ran before posting. But I got tired of waiting. 5 hours is a long time for 40,000 uF. Please let us know how long it runs if you can stay up that late.

The old cats whisker tuned to a natural beat frequency. That would be the ticket.
@xee2 ... It quit just short of 6.5 hours total. Not to bad for a modified JT circuit running on caps.
@jbigness ... that's the ticket - any natural frequency able to push a current of .035ma at over a volt would do it. There is so much " buzz " in the air with all the electronics media you could tap into almost anything for that small of input.
I tested a flat tesla pancake coil on it this evening, it worked quite well but it does draw more energy from the caps. No time on that one yet as it's still going. The LED is quite bright on that one though... have to dig through the coil pile and see what else I might have before I actually wind another one....

From the link it talks about lightning striking over 100 times a second and the transmissions of that as radio waves in our atmosphere. Thats as natural as you should want it. Not based off our own chatter but the natural chatter of our planet. The pure sound of nature.
I had some success with dragon's circuit. I could not get a germanium diode to work, but I was able to get it to work with a resistor. The interesting thing is that it seems to work better without the ferite core. This would lead me to conclude that it is the bifilar capacitance, not inductance, that is making the circuit work. The circuit ran for 6 minutes bright without ferite. Since I was only using 10,000 uF, that would be equivalent to about 24 minutes with 40,000 uF. Good, but not six hours so it needs more work.
In the following circuit the bifilar coil was replaced with a capacitor. The circuit ran for over 45 minutes from a 10,000 uF capacitor charged to 6 volts. This would be over 3 hours if a 40,000 uF capacitor was used. The resistor value was also increased.

Hi all
In this circuit you have parametric oscillation, you are changing the inductance of the coil in the transformer depending if the transistor is on or not. The capacitance/resistor is switched on and off across the coil, the best example I can give is the STEAP work that I have done, see the first part of that thread.
@xee2 Nice work. That is a long time . I have noticed that the pretty clear green leds will actually light up with one wire on 7 volts by completing the circuit with your body . The Clear green is the only led i have ever seen do this . 45 minuits is a long time for a cap ! . I cant wait for my 10 to come in and in the meantime i see definiate capacitance in the Hazens torroid coil i am using on the cap with the battery . I have beat my record for lighting a CFL and its still running after 25 hours and has plenty of power left in the battery this morning 1.235 . It should stop around .600 and that could be days . with one wire disconnected from the germaniums the circuit still oscillates and the cfl will go out but if you touch it you can see its still lighting up . Your last schematic is easy to replicate and we should see more reps . !! If i have time i am throwing that one together today also . I spent all night trying to get the goldmine 4 for a 1$ camera boards working off the board . I could not . Its transformer has only 4 wires and several other inductors and parts like a boost converter . Oh well . still have one fugi left as i broke one trying to push it thru a solder proto board . they are easy to break .
