  • 19y.o. kid covers a satelite dish with mirrors and creates "death ray"

A satelite dish with 5800 little mirrors concentrate sun light and melt everything.

Couldn't we have this technology home to heat water and create electricity.

    Such a simple thing.

    Good Job

Yes, Easy with many other interesting possibilities.

      Hi bugler /ALL

makes sense, you have coal here that's burnt to create Heat for steam turbines, most of the day (whilst the sun is out) they could use a parabolic dish i dont see any reason why not, of cause you wont burn as much coal so they wont like that

If the energy is directed at a Stirling engine it can power a generator.

          Megawatts

Megawatts are produced this way in Arizona. Eclectic salts are dissolved at somewhere near 600F, dropped into insulated bunkers and used on demand for steam generation. A 250 MW plant is in the works.

Has anyone seen my Bedini Ceiling Fan that pushes the warm air down, and charges batteries as an added bonus? Me neither. 'Bout time I made one!!!!! :P

We've been collecting parts for this.
All you need a simple satellite dish and the stand for it. You can even get fancy and modify the stand to do solar tracking with the addition of a 2 stepper motors. Of course you have to have the controllers and an IC that can run floating point numbers. We chose the Parallax Propeller. But I still working on this part.
Anyway NOAA has algorithm's that can calculate the exact position of the sun based on your position (Log. Lat.) and the date.
You can follow the sun no matter what.

A small boiler can be built with copper tubing coiled up and fire clay and used to run a Tesla Turbine. We'll get to this part soon I hope.

For anybody who can fabricate slightly its not a big trick. If your gonna build one go to ebay and buy your mirrors. Thats where the best deals are. Also there is a guy on ebay that sells steppers with controllers attached. Thats your best bet.

            Burn it up..

                Amazing

Its amazing that the sun does not cause more destruction when you see how
easy it is to light a fire with just a magnifying glass. This just proves the principle further. We must be in a very delicate balance between being safe and not being safe when you realize how little it takes to do this.

                  Hardly new

During 'Greek/Roman times' there was an invasion fleet of sailing ships, coming in to land. The opposing force was lined up on the beach, holding polished shields. Set the sails of the ships on fire, sunk the ships and won the battle. Or, so it is said. So, we've had this knowledge for that long, and haven't really done much with it, considering, even now.Imagine if the time, effort and $ used to develop nuclear energy, had been put into this, instead!
All of humanity, collectively, saying "DOH!!! I coulda had a V-8!" ;-)

There's no reason to use a stirling engine for this type of generator. A stirling engine is useful for its ability to convert small thermal differences to mechanical work. If you're able to boil water, there's no need for a stirling engine; a turbine will do.

Not a chance this actually happened. Good story, though.

Very cool video. This is a poor choice for home technology because it's dangerous, expensive, and there's really no reason to use it over well-established and perfectly effective methods of passive and active solar electricity generation and water heating.

The established method of passive solar water heating, for example, is basically piping your water through black tubes sitting in the sun. Pretty cheap, simple, and effective.

It's only dangerous at the focal point, which is a small area. I would say this is much safer than using natural gas for cooking or heating your home, if appropriate precautions are taken.

No you don’t need a Stirling engine, but it is cheaper than a steam turbine system in smaller applications and is similar in efficiency. It must be said it is much safer too, live steam, especially if its superheated dry steam is very very dangerous.

Another advantage of the Stirling is fewer parts to break down.

It did happen. They have had alot of dives in that area looking for old artifacts. It was planned by Archimedes. They have evidence that great number not only sank but sank from fire.

People weren't stupid in those day, by any means.
