  • Grid tie diesel generator

    Hi There

I have had a look around the site and I have found some really interesting info here.

I currently have a 1.5 kw solar panel system on my roof.

At the moment, I have 2000 litres of diesel (1000 litres of black diesel and 1000 ltr's of biodiesel) that I use to run my car on. Looking here - I think I have read that I may be able to run this in a generator and then turn my power meter backwards?

How do I go about it? From what I have read - I think I can simply buy something like this

DIESEL GENERATOR SILENCED 8 KVA 3 PHASE SINGLE PHASE | eBay

start it running - plug it into a socket in the house and it will start running the meter backwards? Have I got that right or will that kill everyone?

If not - what do I have to do to use some of this fuel to offset my power bills. The diesel is free to me so I would love to reuse it to offset my power billsas well as my travel bills.

Something to consider is some power companies say they will only buy back a small percentage of your total power consumption for a giving time.

So if you use 20KWH in a month they may only buy back 2KWH in that time period. Also they may need to inspect and approve you grid tie and power source.

I only briefly looked into this with my power company a good while back. It would be good to no more on the ins and outs of selling power back. Maybe a solar power or wind power forum may have more info on this subject.

I looked into the grid tie in the UK and they are quite prepared to sell you the deal: i.e. panels, grid tie meter and give you a loan and buy back any (small) excess. But if you just want to have a box added to your house that you can pipe into electricity from whatever source and sell – it cannot be done. You need their equipment at their prices.

Probably in Oz the answer is perhaps to plug your own supply into the "house" wiring switching off the mains supply. If one is in the bush then one can be more expansive!! Would this unit be adequate to provide all ones needs?

Ok - so if we take the legal aspect out of it, would this generator work? If it does - what equipment would I need to feed the power back in and wind the meter backwards?

            Thanks for the help!

I've just finished checking my electricity bills. They are done 3 monthly, but I've got the maximum one at about 37.89 kWH/day.

So that would mean about 1.58 an hour. so if I add a good 25% - that would take me up to 1.83

So I'd want a unit to produce a comfortable 43.89 kwh per day. To help the generator last - I could run it at a slower rate (5kwh output instead of 6.4kwh) for 9 hours I should have enough power to offset my usage?

Then comes to the batteries. Thats really what I want to use the grid for - a virtual battery. ie To run the meter backwards during that 9 hours of run time and then to run forwards overnight to come back to the zero point without needing the battery component.
