  • How do i restore a VRLA gel battery?

    Hi all!
Today i disasembled a solar light that didn't work anymore and foud out that the cause was two 6v, 4.5Ah VRLA gel cells at about 4v - probably sulfated. So i took a smart charger with a desulphation function and attached the batteries, but sadly the charger would desulphate for about 5 minutes and then it would turn off. Next i tried a normal charger, but the batteries would simply not take a charge. Then i attached the batteries to my Bedini SS charger, but as soon as i turned it on i heard a crackling noise from the batteries so i shut it down immediately - maybe the crackling was due to the gel inside the batteries separating from the plates 'cause of the hidrogen and oxygen bubbles or something like that...

So here i am now asking if any of you guys knows a method to restore the batteries? Once i heard that putting it in the freezer would solve the problem - do anyone have experience with this one?

Anyway, thx in advance for the answers!

From what you describe I would suspect that they dried beyond recovery.

The next day i gave it another shot with the bedini ss charger and i put a neon across the output - so the voltage would not rise above 90v. There was still some but very little crackling noise and after a minute or two it disapeared. The voltage on the batteries went down from 90v to around 50v in a couple of minutes, then it took a day to get to 12v (batteries in series) and another day and a half to get up to 15v. Then i discharged the batteries through a 10w lihgtbulb - it took 2 and a half hours to reach 10.5v, after that recharged again and it took only 21 hours to fully charge up.
Now the solar light is back as new... will see for how long...
