One concept that's easily experimented with at home, is that of speakers in reverse.
Just a personal thought and that may be of worth. A conventional speaker will produce movements from the electrical energy (sound waves) sent to it. Speakers will also work as microphones...reversing that flow through their coils. Electret condenser microphones require a voltage going in to them to do their work..but a speaker doesn't.
So, the idea is to line up a few speakers, of different sizes and impedance ratings and connect them to a digital multi-meter.
The readings ought to increase with certain harmonic ranges, frequencies, noise levels.
By trial and error, you might find the type and size that creates the most usable energy from the sound around you or from test equipment that can output frequencies (555 simple circuit etc).
