Solar installations
Hi there Greengreg ,
Ive installed lots of systems over the years and this is what ive found . It is expensive for what you get but if you can afford it it has is benefits in the long run especially the PLANET . A gird tie system that feeds back to your house meter is proberly the easyest to install to reduce you power bills but if your roof is shaded or slopey and not facing north-south the efficientcy levels drop to a point where the price to output ratio is not worth it . So the panels need to be in an open flat place to get the proper benefits - many people in town that have odd roofs dont benefit that much for what they pay . One thing that holds you back with a basic grid tie systems is they need power from the mains before they switch on so if your power goes out you wont be able to use your solar unless you pay more for a special system . Stand alone systems are very expensive because of the batteries and the extra panels to run your house through the day and charge the batteries through the day . So on a stand alone system say your house uses 3kw an hour on average you would need about 5kw worth of panels to compensate for clouds etc and then you would need about 10kw worth of panels to charge the batteries so you could get back 3kw from the batteries at twilight to night back to twilight . So on average to get 3 kw continuous output you need a 15 kw system . Ill write some more info when i get time . cheers Jason
