The Aljafería Palace (Arabic:قصر الجعفرية Qasr Aljafariya, Spanish: Palacio de la Aljafería) is a fortified medieval Islamic palace built during the second half of the 11th century in the Moorish taifa of Zaragoza of Al-Andalus, present day Zaragoza, Spain. It was the residence of the Banu Hud dynasty during the era of Abu Jaffar Al-Muqtadir after abolishing Banu Tujibi of Kindah dynasty. the palace reflects the splendor attained by the kingdom of the taifa of Zaragoza at the height of its grandeur. The palace currently contains the Cortes (regional parliament) of the autonomous community of Aragon.

The structure holds unique importance in that it is the only conserved testimony of a large building of Spanish Islamic architecture of the era of the Taifas (independent kingdoms).

After the capture of Zaragoza in 1118 by Alfonso I of Aragon, the Aljaferia became the residence of the Christian kings of the Kingdom of Aragon and as such was converted into the focal point for spread of the Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon. it was the birthplace of Saint Isabel of Portugal in the year 1271. of Portugal in the year 1271.

Taliesin West (aka The Ship ) was architect Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and school in the desert from 1937 until his death in 1959 at the age of 91. Today it is the main campus of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture[5] and houses the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

Wright and the Taliesin Fellowship began to "trek" to Arizona each winter in 1933 (similar trekking as Leedskalnin ). In 1937 Wright purchased the plot of desert land that would soon become Taliesin West. He paid “$3.50 an acre on a southern slope of the McDowell Range overlooking Paradise Valley outside Scottsdale.”[6]

Wright believed this to be the perfect spot for such a building, a place of residence, a place of business and a place to learn. Wright described it like this, “Finally I learned of a site twenty-six miles from Phoenix, across the desert of the vast Paradise Valley. On up to a great mesa in the mountains. On the mesa just below McDowell Peak we stopped, turned, and looked around. The top of the world.”[7]

Being in the desert water could scarcely be found. This resulted in an investment of over ten thousand dollars to dig a well deep enough to provide sufficient water for the campus.

Design

Wright felt very strongly about the connection to the desert. He said: “Arizona needs its own architecture… Arizona’s long, low, sweeping lines, uptilting planes. Surface patterned after such abstraction in line and color as find “realism” in the patterns of the rattlesnake, the Gila monster, the chameleon, and the saguaro, cholla or staghorn – or is it the other way around—are inspiration enough.”

The structure's walls are made of local desert rocks, stacked within wood forms, filled with concrete. Wright always believed using the materials readily available opposed to those that must be transported to the site. In Wright’s own words, “There were simple characteristic silhouettes to go by, tremendous drifts and heaps of sunburned desert rocks were nearby to be used. We got it all together with the landscape…”[7] The flat surfaces of the rocks were placed outward facing and large boulders filled the interior space so concrete could be conserved.

Silbury Hill, located just south of the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, is a massive artificial mound with a flat top. It is approximately 130 feet (40 m.) high, with a base circumference of 1640 feet. It is composed of over 12 million cubic feet (339,600 cubic m.) of chalk and earth and covers over 5 acres (2 ha). Silbury Hill occupies a low-lying site and except at certain points in the landscape (notably from the West Kennet Long Barrow from which this photograph was taken), it does not protrude significantly above the horizon.

It was built in three stages, the first begun around 2,660 B.C.E. The last phase comprised the building of six concentric steps or terraces of chalk which were then covered with chalk rubble, flints, gravel, and finally soil to form a cone-shaped mound. Each of the six steps was concealed within the overall profile of the mound, except the last one at the top which was left as a terrace or ledge about 17 feet (5 m.) below the summit. Another explanation argues that Silbury Hill could have been used as an accurate solar observatory by means of the shadows cast by the mound itself on the carefully levelled plain to the north, towards Avebury. The meridian line from Silbury runs through Avebury church which stands on a ley line running between Stonehenge and the stone circle at Winterbourne Abbas. The same ley line also passes through two churches and the eastern slope of Silbury. Silbury, in fact, is a centre for alignments of straight prehistoric tracks, resurfaced by the Romans, and of standing stones. The Roman road between Marlborough and Bath runs directly towards Silbury Hill before swerving to avoid it. This would indicate that the Roman road followed a pre-existing track or ley line. John Michell (see Ley Lines) makes the following observations:

but the cult is now preserved mostly in China and the Buddhist countries, “Bel and the Dragon being uniformly coupled together, and the priest of the Ophite religion as uniformly assuming the name of his God” (“Archaeology,” Vol. xxv., p. 220, London). In the religions of the past, it is in Egypt we have to seek for its Western origin. The Ophites adopted their rites from Hermes Trismegistus, and heliolatrous worship crossed over with its Sun-gods into the land of the Pharaohs from India. In the gods of Stonehenge we recognise the divinities of Delphi and Babylon, and in those of the latter the devas of the Vedic nations. There were numerous catacombs in Egypt and Chaldea (see cross of Hendaye near the Pyrenee Mountains ), some of them of a very vast extent. The most renowned of them were the subterranean crypts of Thebes and Memphis. The former, beginning on the western side of the Nile, extended towards the Lybian desert, and were known as the Serpent’s catacombs, or passages. It was there that were performed the sacred mysteries of the kuklos anagkes, the “Unavoidable Cycle,” more generally known as “the circle of necessity”; the inexorable doom imposed upon every soul after the bodily death, and when it has been judged in the Amenthian region.

In de Bourbourg’s book, Votan, the Mexican demi-god, in narrating his expedition, describes a subterranean passage which ran underground, and terminated at the root of the heavens, adding that this passage was a snake’s hole, “un agujero de colubra”; and that he was admitted to it because he was himself “a son of the snakes,” or a serpent. This is, indeed, very suggestive; for his description of the snake’s hole is that of the ancient Egyptian crypt, as above mentioned. The hierophants, moreover, of Egypt, as of Babylon, generally styled themselves the “Sons of the Serpent-god,” or “Sons of the Dragon,” during the mysteries.-

“The Assyrian priest bore always the name of his god,” says Movers. The Druids of the Celto-Britannic regions also called themselves snakes. “I am a Serpent, I am a Druid,” they exclaimed. The Egyptian Karnak is twin brother to the Carnac of Bretagne, the latter Carnac meaning the serpent’s mount. The Dracontia once covered the surface of the globe, and these temples were sacred to the Dragon, only because it was the symbol of the sun, which, in its turn, was the symbol of the highest god — the Phoenician Elon or Elion, whom Abraham recognised as El Elion.* Besides the surname of serpents, they were called the “builders,” the “architects”; for the immense grandeur of their temples and monuments was such that even now the pulverised remains of them “frighten the mathematical calculations of our modern engineers,” says Taliesin (similar name as Frank Lloyd wright's retreat: the Ship )

Furthermore, the “War in Heaven” is shown, in one of its significations, to have meant and referred to those terrible struggles in store for the candidate for adeptship, between himself and his (by magic) personified human passions, when the inner enlightened man had to either slay them or fail. In the former case he became the “Dragon-Slayer,” as having happily overcome all the temptations; and a “Son of the Serpent” and a Serpent himself, having cast off his old skin and being born in a new body, becoming a Son of Wisdom and Immortality in Eternity.

Can any one fail to see the identity? Had the Rt. Hon. W. E. Gladstone, who prides himself on his Greek scholarship and understanding of the spirit of Homer’s allegories, ever had a real inkling of the esoteric meaning of the Iliad and Odyssey, he would have understood St. John’s “Revelation,” and even the Pentateuch, better than he does. For the way to the Bible lies through Hermes, Bel, and Homer, as the way to these is through the Hindu and Chaldean religious symbols (Cross of Hendaye / the Cathars ) .

Anyone out under the stars in the early evening lately likely cannot help but notice two brilliant objects dominating the western sky: the planets Venus and Jupiter.

Venus, because it is closer to the sun than Earth, never strays far from the sun in our sky. Jupiter, being outside the Earth's orbit can appear anywhere along the ecliptic — the path of the sun, moon, and planets across the sky. Venus and Jupiter are gradually growing closer, and will pass each other on March 13.

The moon, meanwhile, is making its monthly trip around the Earth and will pass these two planets on Saturday and Sunday this week (Feb. 25 and 26). The moon appears close to Venus on Saturday night, and then near Jupiter on Sunday night. The view on either night will be what astronomers call a triple conjunction.

In Norse mythology, Vafþrúðnismál (Vafþrúðnir's sayings) is the third poem in the Poetic Edda. It is a conversation in verse form conducted initially between the Æsir Odin and Frigg, and subsequently between Odin and the giant Vafþrúðnir. The poem goes into detail about the Norse cosmogony and was evidently used extensively as a source document by Snorri Sturluson in the construction of the Prose Edda who quotes it. The poem is preserved in Codex Regius and partially in AM 748 I 4to. There are preservation problems relating to stanzas 40-41.

The area includes the Mars regions: "Cydonia Mensae", an area of flat-topped mesa-like features, "Cydonia Colles", a region of small hills or knobs, and "Cydonia Labyrinthus", a complex of intersecting valleys.[5][6] As with other albedo features on Mars, the name Cydonia was drawn from classical antiquity, in this case from Kydonia, a historic polis (or "city-state") on the island of Crete.[7]

Cydonia contains the "face on Mars" feature — located about half-way between Arandas Crater and Bamberg Crater[4] The ESA "skull" formation is a few kilometres south of the "face".[4]

Medina-Sidonia is a city and municipality in the province of Cádiz in the autonomous community of Andalusia, southern Spain. It is considered by some to be the oldest city in Europe, used as a military defense location due to its elevated location. Locals are known as Asidonenses. The city's name comes from Medina (Arabic for city) and Sidonia (of Sidon), meaning "City of Sidon".

Medina-Sidonia was one of Spain's most important ducal seats in the 15th century; producing an admiral, Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, 7th Duke of Medina Sidonia, who led the Spanish Armada against England in 1588. The title of Duque de Medina Sidonia was bestowed upon the family of Guzmán El Bueno for his valiant role in taking the town. The line continues and was led until March 2008 by the controversial socialist, Luisa Isabel Álvarez de Toledo, 20th Duchess of Medina Sidonia (born 1936).

It is one of the oldest doors in the town. Its name is due to the fact that it faces the same direction as the rays of sunshine at dawn. It is located behind that which, in its time, was the Ducal Palace of the Medina Sidonia.

Castle of Torrestrella

Ruins of an Arabic castle, it was called Medina Sidonia up to the creation of the Santa María Military Order of Spain. At this point it was donated to the latter with the name of Estrella (Star) (aka Astarte / Ishtar ).

Astarte was connected with fertility, sexuality, and war. Her symbols were the lion, the horse, the sphinx, the dove, and a star within a circle indicating the planet Venus. .

Church of Santa María la Mayor (Church of Santa Maria Superior)

Church of Santa Maria Superior, the Crowned, belongs to the gothic-renaissance period of the XVI century. Most noteworthy are its altarpiece, from the Baroque, and the engraving of the Christ of Forgiveness by Pedro Roldán.
It was declared a Historical Artistic Monument in June of 1931.

Carmelite Monastery of San José del Cuervo

It is a building of great dimensions, located right in the Alcornocales Natural Park, in Sierra Blanquilla, and it is surrounded by cliffs and cork oak groves, which lends it great beauty.

Introductory Remarks.

ALTHOUGH this brief epitome of Moorish
history runs to 40 pages, the space occupied
is not excessive. It is true of most
countries that you cannot understand to-day unless
you know something of yesterday, and this truth
applies with special force to Morocco, which
without some knowledge of its history would
be a hopeless enigma.

The anecdotes inserted are intended not only
to lighten the narrative, but to illustrate present
Moorish life. The incidents in the flight of Idris I.,
the building of Fez, &c., might mutatis mutandis
happen to-day. The stories of Kahena and of
Zeinab will show that women's life in the East is
not the mere harem existence it is supposed to
be.

Historical Sketch.

CHAPTER I.
Early Days.

Legends. Ancient legends tell of Antaeus, the mighty

Giant son of Atlas, King of Mauretania. The
monster killed all whom he could catch, to add
their skulls to a mound which he was raising in
honour of Neptune (which is none other than Poseidon God of Atlantis. Hercules destroyed him, and
the rocks which guard the Straits of Gibraltar are
known to this day as the " Pillars of Hercules."

The Berbers claim for themselves descent from Goliath of Gath,
the Amalekite giant who fell before the pebble of David, the shepherd
boy of Israel.

In 424 A.D. we find Bonifacius, the Roman
Count (Comes) of Africa, inviting Genseric the

A Christian Hermit. Idris II. founds Fez.

young Moorish noble is busying himself and a
few followers. It is February, in the year of
our Lord 808, and the country shows the tender
green due to the influence of spring. An old
hermit whose crucifix betokens his creed, and
whose solitude has been disturbed by the bustle,
asks him what he is doing. " Building a City "
is the curious reply. The answer seems to
awaken th£ old man from the lethargy of age
and, " If this be so, O Emir, I have good tidings
for thee," quoth he. He then narrates how his
predecessor at the hermitage told him that a
city named "Sef" had been located there 1,700
years ago. The *' Book of Knowledge " of this
predecessor had also stated that "one day a son of
" the Prophets should come and rebuild, his name
" shall be Idris, and his achievements great : he
" shall plant Islam here, and it shall endure for
"ever." "Praised be God," said Idris, and starts
digging the foundations of Fez.

organized Empire to his descendants.!

It was in his time that Sicily was ruled by Norman
Counts, and the tivo Rogers, father and son, were men
of great ability. They took Algeria, Tunis and Tripoli,
and would have carried their conquests furthey\ (says
the Arab historian) but for a quarrel which resulted in
war with the Byzantine Emperor, whom they defeated
and bearded in Constantinople.

* He was not particular as to the means. When he was beaten, he
got some friends to allow themselves to be buried alive with breathing
boles arranged. At night be took his followers to the battlefield and
addressed questions to the faithful dead. He was answered by his
confederates who told of the glories of Paradise. When the dupes had
gone, he buried his friends in real earnest. " Dead men tell no tales."

t One of the towns re-established by Abd el Mumin was Mequinez
(iijo A.D.), and the water supply of Sallee was laid on by him. He also
built the castle at Gibraltar (1161 (HM 9 ) a.d.).

J After the death of the second Roger, his son Gregory lost Algeria
and Tunis to Abd el Mumin, who thus extended his Empire till it
included Spain and the whole cf North Africa.


Abd-el-Mumin's son, Abou Yakoub Yussef, who
succeeded him (1163) was a great student,* and
administrator, who would be better known to
history, but for his eclipse by his more famous
brother '• El Mansur."

The greatest of this family was Abou Yussef
Yacoub, who is usually known emphatically as
" El Mansur " the Victorious (sometimes written
Almansor). He beat three Christian Kings
combined (Kings of Castille, Leon, and Aragon)
on the field of Alarcos (1195 a.d.).

The surface of Mars appears to have been shaken by quakes relatively recently, hinting at the existence of active volcanoes and perhaps reservoirs of liquid water on the Red Planet, a new study suggests.

Using photographs snapped by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, researchers analyzed the tracks made by boulders that fell from a Martian cliff. The number and size of these boulders — which ranged from 6.5 to 65 feet (2 to 20 meters) in diameter — decreased over a radius of 62 miles (100 kilometers) from a point along Mars' Cerberus Fossae faults.
