Scientists reveal how natural systems limit the spread of "cheating" bacteria

(Phys.org) -- In the first field study of its kind researchers at Royal Holloway, University of London and the University of Oxford have investigated the competitive dynamics of pathogenic and non-pathogenic strains of bacteria.

Bacteria are increasingly seen as living and interacting in groups and sharing resources such as virulence factors, biofilms, and proteins used to scavenge iron. Investing in these shared resources can be thought of as cooperation.

However as in human societies, this type of cooperation is threatened by “cheaters” that exploit the hard work of others, but fail to contribute themselves. Lead researcher, Dr. Ben Raymond, from the School of Biological Sciences at Royal Holloway, explains: “These interactions are particularly important for pathogens and for understanding disease since many bacterial toxins are secreted outside of cells into a common pool and are potentially exploitable by pathogenic and non-pathogenic strains alike.”

Up to now these ideas have principally been investigated in the laboratory in well-understood model systems but the study published today (6 July) in the journal Science is the first to have been carried out in a natural setting using the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis. The research was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the Biotechnology and Biological Science Research Council and the Royal Society.

Dr. Raymond adds: “Both co-operators and cheaters do well when rare, but the cheaters cannot totally exclude co-operators as toxin production is essential for getting access to the rich resources contained within their caterpillar hosts.

“We also found that co-operators tend to live in patches with other co-operators in the field, meaning that cheaters will have limited opportunities to exploit the toxin producers. This is of broad importance because bacterial toxins cause damage during disease, so many bacterial pathogens secrete toxins in order to attack their hosts. Bacillus thuringiensis is an important biological insecticide, widely exploited for its ability to produce large quantities of toxins. We now understand why massive investment in these metabolically costly products is stable in the field.”

Non-pathogenic and pathogenic strains of many dangerous species including cholera, E. coli and Streptococcus all co-exist in nature and this new research could help scientists to understand how and why.

Dr. Michael Bonsall, Reader in Mathematical Biology in Zoology at Oxford, said: “The challenge now is to understand more thoroughly how changes in bacterial population abundance affect these sorts of evolutionary patterns."

The article reports that fast moving orbs were spotted this last week from the U.S. to Europe with many believing they were the same group of UFOs but were left wonder how they could travel so fast.

Fast flying orbs of light have been spotted in the US and Europe almost simultaneously. While many suggest they were the same UFOs, the question remains: how they could travel so fast?

First the phenomenon was spotted over Salt Lake City, Utah, about a week ago. Then it was also seen in Poland, Greece and Slovakia, some 9,000 kilometers away.

Witnesses report that the Orbs were red and orange in color and resembled nothing known to be in existence.

It's been a year or more now, but I was reading about Jon Piniel's experiences in a Tibetan monastery and after leaving the monastery in an enlightened state, he mentioned in his memoirs about visiting someone in California that told him the Moody Blues had some help from a higher power when writing their lyrics. I don't remember all the details now, but I thought you might be interested in another possible synchronicity.

Physics team proposes a way to create an actual space-time crystal

(Phys.org) -- Earlier this year, theoretical physicists Frank Wilczek, of MIT put forth an idea that intrigued the research community. He suggested that it should be possible to construct a so called space-time crystal by adding a fourth dimension, movement in time, to the structure of a crystal, causing it to become an infinitely running clock of sorts. At the time, Wilczek acknowledged that his ideas on how to do so were inelegant, to say the least. Now another international team led by Tongcang Li has proposed a way to achieve what Wilczek proposed using a far more elegant process. They have posted a paper on the preprint server arXiv describing what they believe is a real-world process for creating an actual space-time crystal that could conceivably be carried out in just the next few years.

Wilczek thought that it should be possible to construct a space-time crystal because crystals naturally align themselves at low temperatures and because superconductors also operate at very low temperatures; it seemed reasonable to assume that the atoms in such a crystal could conceivably move or rotate and then return to their natural state naturally, continually, as crystals are wont to do as they seek a lowest energy state. He envisioned a rotation with a ring of ions that flowed separately rather than as a stream, likening it to a mouse running around inside of a snake laying as a circle. The bulge would flow, rather than the snake itself spinning and would just keep on going, potentially forever. The problem was, he couldn’t figure out how such a crystal structure could be created in the real world.

Taking Wilczek’s original idea, but not his method for creating a real world example, Li et al, suggest that to create a space-time crystal all that’s needed is a better ion trap. They believe that if ions could be forced using such a trap, into a ring at very low temperatures, as a superconductor, all that would be needed would be a little nudge from a tiny bit of a magnetic field to cause the ions to begin rotating as a single ring. Because there would be no resistance, and because of their natural mutual repulsion, the ring should then continue rotating indefinitely with no additional injection of energy, resulting in the space-time crystal that Wilczek imagined.

Some scientists have likened it to voodoo, while Albert Einstein called it just plain "spooky." In the bizarre realm of quantum mechanics, entanglement is the phenomenon in which two seemingly distinct particles control each other in ways that defy common physical sense. For instance, when an atom located in Beijing is measured by an observer, it will exhibit the exact opposite qualities of its entangled counterpart in Boston.

In the 1930s, the idea of entanglement seemed so absurd that Einstein derided it as "spooky action at a distance" and argued that it revealed serious shortcomings in quantum theory.

Today, however, entanglement stands as the essential feature of quantum mechanics, and scientists say its exploitation could lead to extraordinary leaps in computing, communications and cryptology. A quantum computer, they say, would take seconds to solve problems that today's PCs would take billions of years to parse. Governments, financial institutions and armies, meanwhile, are intrigued by the potential for secure long-distance communications that would instantly reveal attempts at hacking.

Those technologies may still be sometime in the future, but researchers in Germany have taken a step closer to their realization. In a report Friday in the journal Science, physicists at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich said they had demonstrated that two atoms separated by a distance of about 65 feet could become entangled and trigger an alert to announce that they had done so.

To visualize the phenomenon, imagine two boxes that each contain a single coin, said study co-author Wenjamin Rosenfeld. In quantum mechanics, neither coin has a defined orientation - heads or tails - until an observer opens one of the boxes and sees which side is facing up. At that instant, the second coin will be found, without fail, to be lying in the exact opposite position, no matter how far away it is.

While other experiments have successfully entangled atoms, photons and diamond crystals, this was the first to do so at a long distance and include a signal, or herald, to let scientists know that entanglement had been achieved. Such a signal - in this case, a message on a computer screen - is crucial to the further study of entanglement and its future practical application, researchers said.
