Here's a 'not only but also'.
As described as a test above, a 1.2V 120mAh Ni-MH thoroughly discharged battery was connected up (has sat next to its regular charger for months).
Here are the readings as logged:

12.35 1.100V - slow down in charge rate noticed

The longer the time connected, the more current available.
