  • I may be wrong, but the negistor types are the requirement...however, he has shown a diode in place of that method on one PSEC.
RadioShack is good for a quick fix of 3 types all in the same bag for a couple of bucks (forgive my ignorance but do you have RS up there ?). Could be a tip for others, half a dozen of each of 2N2222A, 2N3904 and 2N4401.
How on earth they got the only 3 reported negistor type NPN's to be in the same bag in beyond me...unless extensive testing hasn't been done and the reports are based on a RadioShack bag

The NPN and PNP lists are in the huge JonnyDavro Joule Thief Exciter thread:
    http://www.energeticforum.com/renewa...riants-62.html
    Post 1844 on that page

However, one thing to note, my recently posted codge up SEC 18-1 from a CRT monitor PCB uses a STS5343 - Datasheet here: http://www.auk.co.kr/pro_upload/STS5343_1.pdf
It was about the only 'decent' transistor on the PCB.
Now, what do I mean by decent ? really, that it has a high hFE, low switch on voltage, decent switching speed. It's the same story with regard to the trannies lists I put together.
Notes on that one - Low collector saturation voltage of 0.25V, Max current gain of 240, Decent breakdown voltages of 60V and 50V and fair enough switch off of current at 0.1uA. Collector current is 150mA, which, isn't bad, but nowhere near the 1A or so for heavier loading and keeping cool (if tuned right, we may imagine the tranny to run cool and the power draw to be very low...but until that happens, the magic smoke may escape).
Low side is the switching speed of 80MHz, but it's not bad in any way considering it'll never see that need to be quicker (power trannies can only typically switch around 3 or 4MHz).
Can forget C945, S9018, S8050 and others with similar datasheets...but by all means try them to see and compare.

For the Slayer, the best for me of the TO-92 size was the KN2222A, which is a slightly spritelier version of the ubiquitous 2N2222A.
Disclaimer - that's my experience, others may hold different views or have been around electronics much longer than I.

      • That's a great series of videos that show your experiments

Hope this is useful for people. I've been looking at Crystal radio's, in common with others and with the aim of furthering base knowledge of radio frequencies.
One website being: Chapter 4: Radio
Within which, i've found a coil calculator...shows how many turns you'll need on a particular coil form size.
Here's the link: Crystal Radio Design Page
With reference to the coils on the PSEC devices and especially the L2 (in my view), I entered a spool diameter of 0.25", capacitor size of 330pf (331 such as written on a small orange ceramic cap), wire size of 23AWG and the frequency of 13MHz.

        ---------
The frequency is 13000000 Hertz (or 13000 kiloHertz) (or 13 megaHertz)
        The capacitance is 330 picoFarads(or 0.00033 microFarads)

The inductance of the coil is 0.454 microHenrys

The coil will have 10.145 turns
and will be 0.2 inches long (you will need 9 inches of wire)
        ---------

wow... very well written Ben. Thankyou. Time to blank the mind, and re-read. Many times. Very generous of you, whether 100% correct or not, to put in the time to present such a thing so concisely, yet with so few words...

            • @Slider

in my experiment, all of my results can easily be chocked down to self resonance, I suppose, with an exception...

I got flashes of large output, that just about made me **** my pants...

I spent 22 hours trying to tune into those flashes I even added 0-5 picofarad capciters to the larger sweeping on. But i could never lock it in.

Have you experienced such a thing. I'm not talking brief moments of "slightly increased output" I mean BRIGHT flashes out 2-3X output.

also, when the circuit was unloaded, and I was tuning for plasma the same thing existed, and was present in that the plasma jet, had your typical conical "flame" but then a thin, single needle-like emission from the center that stuck out about another 1/8" of an inch. This would, at time elongate to almost a 1/4" inch at inputs of 12V/30 mA even.

              Cheers

              Thanks

              • tnx. it's important to see in the sec that energy can flow back thru the circuit because of the diode and filter caps.

                i recommend studying every component.

                truly a wonderful little jewel.

                • @Inquorate - Enjoyed the read immensely...easy to read too for handwritten

@kcarring - yes indeed, those brief flashes. That spot that eludes the finest of setting up, until, an inadvertent bump while arising from the workbench and 'flash' there it was. Whether such a thing is an environmental capacitance dump or perhaps a continuous aetheric lock possibility, is what I would like to find out too.

yes, that is interesting indeed, I completely overlooked that. Well, that and about 75% of what you wrote, to be honest. Great writeup, a real mind opener. I think you've really put some time in on this.

lol, a tiny fraction of the time Dr Stiffler has put in i'm sure, but yeah.

I tried emailing him but got no reply so I wonder are there alternate methods to contact him?

                        • he appears to have taken a holiday now that we have finally figured out what's going on in his circuit.

i don't blame him one bit.

                            • Glad to hear all is well with Dr. Stiffler. In our constant rush to have things done yesterday, perhaps a 'time out' isn't a bad thing. Like learning to ride a bicycle, once the tutor lets go of the back without a word, what happens ?

i've been focusing on crystal radios.
The wish to understand the PSEC by using radio frequencies was heightened by Lidmotor's recent crystal radio video. I'd tried to make a couple of them in the past but failed. Well considering how easy and school children style such radios apparently are, I didn't think much more about it...until that video spurred me on. Its like homemade batteries isn't it, lots of people state they did it in the early years of school and so the experiments are avoided ! But, look how far the crystal cell and Earth light cell experiments have come along ! Disinfo !

I've moved my experiments to the bedroom for winter and so moved my earth ground. It's now of no more than about 7ft and sits outside the window.
An aerial was made from 26 gauge wire, running as straight as I could, out to run between the two trees in our backyard. About 80ft but not considered optimal in any way (a disconnection point is at the back door for lightning storms).
My first foray of this one worked, I was ecstatic
                              Chapter 4: Radio
(first circuit diagram, but I put a ferrite piece in the self made SEC18 type L3 and connected the aerial to the top of it).
It was quickly discovered that I had just 1 station coming in..WBIX, a sports radio station and from which, being as i'm from England in 2007, learned a lot more about American Football. No choice about it
An online search saw why that one was all I could receive....only 450W output power but about a mile away in the middle of Muskogee
I went on to build the Mystery : Consruct the Mystery Crystal Set
Now, volume had increased, but selectivity was still zero, moving the variable 512pF capacitor was like a volume control.
So, I altered the Mystery - adding a real ferrite loopstick from a AM radio and an L3 as what they call a wave trap (i'm new to this).
WOOT! big difference, now I had 4 or 5 stations battling for reception - which lead me on to 'The Urban Cyclops' project, which is just a formative idea for energy harvesting and that i'll expand upon if anyone is interested.

Importantly, playing about with the ferrite piece, removing, shuffling it around, lead to very much higher selectivity....tuning the circuit and noting how placement directions, angles and more played into the radio reception. By doing so, KRMG became strong, a 50KW transmitter in Tulsa, 35miles away.
And then ---- I disconnected the Ground
Get this - by moving the hand around the circuit, introducing blocks of aluminium and other SEC tricks, the tunings are changed
Reception now of the nearby KBIX is much louder than earlier experiments when there was a ground on the circuit.
So, the next stages are to ramp to LED lighting ability, as seen in this video: Electricity from the air Crystal Radio - YouTube
To reduce the aerial length, increase the Q of all components, actually use the jumbling of frequencies to raise input power and just see where it all goes.

Here's my setup at the moment. Note the telephone speaker has a JFET behind it.
As found with Tesla tower circuits for motors, using a BF245A improved volume from the speaker. The speaker also has a 33K resistor across it for impedance needs.

** Update. I must be on the right track. Picked up the speaker to begin some more experiments and the the announcer on WBIC said "it's a bit of a Mystery, we'll have to see how it goes tonight"

                              • Taking this all further and directly relating to PSEC type devices, I found this tonight: Shortwave “Mystery” Crystal Radio
The chap has experimented with changes to the original Mystery crystal radio, for SW reception.
Of note, is this line -

                                C1 – I’ve been using a 20 – 56 pF air variable for coverage of approx. 6 – 10 MHz and a 13 – 250 pF air variable for approx. 2.9 – 12.7 MHz coverage with the coils shown.
We may be able use a regular AM radio 512pF for 13MHz !
