    But, as we wait for technology and government policy to provide us with more responsible ways to simply live, I would love some help on what we can do RIGHT NOW to reduce our carbon footprints.
    In terms of automobiles I think that the best technology we could adopt to reduce carbon emissions now are steam engines. They produce very low emissions because the fuel used to heat the water is burnt at high temperatures. They also allow you to use any fuel to run the vehicle with few or no modifications, which is of benefit in developing countries located in tropical regions which have access to waste vegetation or can grow biofuels. Cyclone Power Technologies and Quasiturbine are two companies I am aware of which produce working engines. I believe that Quasiturbine is the only one out of the two that sells engines to the public, also there's a company building a steam-air engine hybrid car using the Quasiturbine:
