They also allow you to use any fuel to run the vehicle with few or no modifications, which is of benefit in developing countries located in tropical regions which have access to waste vegetation or can grow biofuels. Cyclone Power Technologies and Quasiturbine are two companies I am aware of which produce working engines. I believe that Quasiturbine is the only one out of the two that sells engines to the public, also there's a company building a steam-air engine hybrid car using the Quasiturbine:
