  • Pittsburgh Garden Experiment

This grass roots type group is forming here.

The founders used meetup.com but are working on a website of their own.

They are helping people link up to garden sharing their knowledge, experience, yards, joining with existing community gardens, or taking over abandoned lots.

(Last night at a Bioneers Conference meeting I found out there are over 15,000 vacant lots in Pittsburgh totaling 4 thousand acres. There is a non-profit organization that is helping the community to make use of the land GTECH Strategies and they can teach people how to take over these lots for less than $500 period.)

PGE will also have a series of classes which we just hammered out (I'll be teaching Organic Practices in June with their help).

Seeds and produce exchange can occur among members.

It's a nice idea and I hope it takes off here and maybe other places.

This is interesting from the GTECH site:

"Sunflowers and canola, for example, not only produce oil seeds for biodiesel, but also phytoremediate (or naturally absorb and extract) contaminates from soil."
