  • Simple Sustainable Water Purification

This is a local company. I should see if I can get some of this stuff. Since distilled water I think is supposed to have a neutral pH I'd like to test some of it with a pH strip.

Epiphany Solar Water debuts with a G-20 splash--Allegheny anyone?

Have yourself a glass of pure Allegheny.

A New Castle startup, Epiphany Solar Water Systems, is making a splash on the G-20 scene with an innovative solar technology that hopes to clean up the world's water, especially in developing countries where waterborne illness is a serious problem.

To make the point, Epiphany will be drawing and processing water from the Allegheny River during the G-20. Bottles of the cool brew will be distributed this week on the lawn near the Carnegie Science Center.

The Epiphany system prides itself on ease of use and portability. "It's so simple, you wonder why didn't I think of this?" says Tom Joseph, founder and president. "The key was to design something that a bicycle mechanic in India could fix. That's why it will work in developing nations."

A mechanical engineer and who returned home to help run the family's New Castle Candy company, Joseph and his team perfected the design over four years. A mirror-coated dish harnesses solar energy to distill water at 4000 degrees Fahrenheit and recapture the vapor. The vapor is recaptured, distilling the water to a perfectly pure state.

The system purifies both fresh and salt water, which has tremendous implications in a world where the scarcity of water affects one out of three people in the world, according to the World Health Organization.

"We've studied our competitors and there's nothing like this out there," Joseph says.

Epiphany has launched a non-profit business model to market the technology. Project Evive is seeking private and corporate sponsors to support the purchase the units, which will be placed in universities and around the world where users can access the water with a swipe of a vendor card. Each purchased unit will generate enough revenue to place five more units a year someplace else, Joseph says.

"As big as this problem is, it's a model that will give us the viral growth to serve the people who need it."

VIktor Schauberger mention that distilled water should not be drinked. But there is a way to process them similar to the nature of spring to make the water healthy again. Most mention the spiralling movement of water may help restore it's vitality. And I currently think that spiraling HV pulse around water might do the same.

""VIktor Schauberger mention that distilled water should not be drinked""

it is nothing that a little good intentioned/directed will cannot fix.(or prayer)

i have discovered that things are only "good" and "bad" because a given person accepts or believes them to be. someone (viktor) has fully convinced you that distilled water is bad, therefore you should not drink it because your belief will make it so... (reversed placebo effect)

likewise, whoever Epiphany Solar Water convinces that thier process is the best, it WILL be for those people. It currently works for Tom Joseph because he has convinced himself that it does, as Tesla convinced himself of his inventions BEFORE building them, and they worked.

imagine what the possibilites could be if only you let yourself become fully convinced..... (Matrix Energetics, Paths, the Secret, etc, etc, etc)

Apparently, there is an easier solution to purify water without any energy-intensive distillation process.

I can disinfect water in a solar stove in a few hours.
It does not purify but it does kill the bugs and make the water safe to drink.
A simple activated carbon filter can be used to filter most of the particles first and then the filtered water can be boiled in the solar stove
I make my solar stoves from mylar windscreen reflectors for cars or trucks, they cost about 5 bucks and I pop rivet a few velcro strips on them to make a cone out of them.
Google solar stove and see what comes up.

Can you boil water with your solar store? What happens during the evening time?

              hello anut
Yes I can boil water in my solar stoves even in winter.
The type I mentioned is a bit flimsy and succeptable to wind so I have made a wire frame to stiffen it up.
The hottest part of the day works best with a windsheild reflector type of stove.
To be honest they are a bit of hassle to use but in an emergency they could mean the difference between life and death (hurricane Katrina comes to mind).
During a recent blackout I was eating a 3 course roast meal, so they are effective but a bit of a hassle to use, you need sunglasses and being in the sun in summer is not much fun either
I have cooked roast vegetables and roasted meat with mine.
I put an oven thermometer inside the insulation bag that cantains the cooking vessel and it has reached temps over 150 deg celcius in summer.
Some people use a parabolic reflector and they can easily start a fire with one even in winter.

The type with a conical reflector (like the windsheild reflector I use) is reported to function as fridge when used at night, but I have never tested mine at night.

It would be less energy intensive to make a refillable carbon canister (than can be re-used by refilling with grass - and baking it to reduce it to pure carbon), then loading clean sand on top.

I used to do this as a kid - and after the first cup of water was through it - it came out clear.
Still full of bacteria at this stage though. -

                Next stage is disinfection.
This can be achieved by using UV light at 250 - 270Nm.
You can now get LED devices to produce light in this wavelength - so you just need a reflective surface - the inside of a Sigg bottle would be fine.

This is the principle -(but old technology now) - http://www.nesc.wvu.edu/pdf/dw/publi...t_DWFSOM53.pdf

Just hook it up to a small rugged PV panel - or even standard LED's wired in reverse with a fresnel lens will work fot the minute power it needs.

You could also mass produce a kinetic version (or both conbined) - based on a magnet in a tube - like the shake torches. So - Shake the bottle - safe to drink.

You can also use copper plate and plant seed to disinfect the water from bactery. Use Water Hyacinth to absorb poison from water. Don't eat the Water Hyacinth, properly dispose them since they will become intoxicated.

                    Wow..Very interesting comments.

I think disinfection is not an issue. You can simply use iodine together with colloidal silver to disinfect water.

The only problem is the heavy metals and other toxic chemicals dissolved in the water. Water Hyacinth is a good option, but this plant is not something you can purchase on the internet. If my understanding is correct, it is illegal to possess or transport this plant in Texas.

For my part, i have already got a solution to the problem. I can get drinking water from wherever I can without having to pay for it. To be honest, I am very close to self-sustainable.

Interesting that both of them are in the same category as gold and copper.
