The small diameter solid conductor coils are much less expensive to experiment with, but not exactly the easiest to wind. I tried turning one on a lathe with hand force as tension, but it's still just about as much fun as visiting the dentist.
If anyone out there has a simple coil winder design than can be fabricated with some basic wood working tools and a hand drill or drill press please share.
