  • Vessel Power

    Dear Friends:

I am new to this field of energy, electricity and quantum mechanics / physics. I am trying to build a ship that uses free/ alternative energy to power the vessel motors, domestic lights. This vessel is some 140 meters in long and is be a new built ship. This vessel will be used for Humanitarian Purposes. It will contain a greenhouse, seed bank, medical clinic and small hospital. We intend to use sail power and some alternative powering system. We do not want to use any fossil fuels or use the least as possible. Can any of you give me suggestions. The domestic loads of a clinic a quite large. I do not have time to start at the age of 50 to do all the research to come up with something from scratch by myself.

    Amazing project!

    Hi Brendan,

Best wishes on your project! With a project that large I hope you have a source of knowledge and finances to make it a success! I don't think you appreciate the magnitude of the endeavour.

My suggestion is that you get a group of interested builder together in your local area and keep them well stocked with "pizza and beer" because you are going to need a lot of help with manpower and technical knowledge. Did you hear about the technical neophytes that got themselves stranded in the Artic?

At 50 years old you have time to do things right and no time to do things wrong. Perhaps you know the saying, There is never time to do things right but always time to do things over? Think about it.

If you can't find it in your heart to follow suggestion number 1 then I suggest you go back to school and study engineering. Your teachers and fellow students will be very interested in your project.

At age 51 I went back to school to earn my Master of Science degree. The experience was well worth the time and effort.

I have been a teacher and also a "builder" and I offer these suggestions in honesty and good will. I admire your dream and believe you have made a good start. I hope you see the wisdom and the need to balance that with a firm grasp on reality.

Again, I wish you the best of success with your venture!
There is a reason why science has been successful and technology is widespread. Don't be afraid to do the math and apply the laws of physics.

I don't think the new energy community is ready for you yet.

      Check out Patrick's masterwork here:

You could start with Bedini/Watson and the rotoverter which requires considerable electrical motor aptitude.

It is worth remembering that the Japanese made considerable progress putting solid vertical wing/sails on oil tankers to reduce the cost of conventional propulsion. This is a technology that should work now.
