Here is the current design I'm testing out. I use a small .01uf cap on the energizer stage to attempt to capture as much of the high-frequency energy as I can, kind of like you see in a power supply filter circuit. I then feed that to my large storage capacitor.
I had to use two SCR's because I needed 2 requirements: 1) low gate holding current, and 2) high voltage/ high current capabilities. The combination of the common C106 and the BTA16 provide that for me. The BTA16 is a 16amp, 600 volt SCR that I located online. Any other similar device should work.
I needed the 1K resistor simply to protect the LED from too high a current, but it's value is rather arbitrary. I tried a few different values and they seemed to have minimal impact.Attached Files

I read at the outset that this thread is for the BediniSG without the capacitor section in the output. Is there a thread for the SG that utilizes the capacitor in the output?
I ask because I came up with an idea for a passive dump section based on the SCR/Neon concept, but using a White LED instead of the Neon, and "piggybacking" two different SCR's to get it working properly. It seems to work for me. It automatically dumps the capacitor into the battery at about 3 volts above battery voltage. I tune the dump rate by adjusting the capacitor value so as to target about 12-20 pulses per second.

It is a Heavy wooden Wheel [ cut from Solid wood Door ].
Will be doing the winding with former next time. Did it free-style , thinking I could
keep ends square........no chance.

If it's the version that I'm thinking of (with the neon between the gate and the anode of the SCR) then the threshold for firing that combo would be the breakdown voltage of the neon bulb, which is, for the NE-2, I think about 90V (going from memory here).
Come to think of it, I'm not sure which circuit you're talking about, but for neon/SCR combinations, that's how it works. I do know that the trifilar capacitor dump version works on a timer circuit, but that's probably not what you're talking about here.Last edited by Shamus; 08-11-2009, 05:01 PM.
