Hi mbrownn, I am still running tests, though so far the charge batteries are getting a little more than what is being lost from input batteries, though will not know for sure until this setup runs longer.
The input batteries are bouncing back to almost the same level as they started with when i give the circuit a rest for a bit to check voltages and the charge batteries unloaded are holding the voltage very well, indicating a solid charge.
Will be running this setup for awhile, since it's only drawing around 20 milliamps and swapping cells whenever needed.
Hope that helps, right now I have the led across collector/emitter as shown in modified pic, though seems to be even more efficient than original circuit, brighter led also, though would not work with higher voltages with load at that point.
peace love light
