OK, well lets see if this does the trick.
Coils are in series but wound so they alternate poles. Same polarity magnet is over coil and magnet moves. Magnet is pushed then pulled to next coil of opposite polarity. Just before cogging can happen the polarity of the coils are flopped, causing the coil to reverse it's poles. Thus, making the magnets move forward.

Yeah, I know... the magnets are offset and I didn't address it. But, I just wanted to get to a plausible flopping idea that people think would work. Then we can fine tune.
From my memory at the event I didn't notice any offset, but then again I wasn't looking super hard at it... I was just trying to take it all in. I remember looking at them and searching for the offset, but didn't see it. I saw it later in a photo, so that leads me to believe only a few are offset, less than 5. My guess is two, one for N and one for S, just to get it nudged in the right direction.

Now let's make it run as a motor how many switching pole would you need assuming that you only had 12 super pole magnets?.
You do not half to answer all at once, where would the recharge come from and what would the fields look like, and assuming that you did not have any magnets could you still make it run. Now what is my Axel motor?

Ill take a stab at this with a quote from Ed
"The breaking away from the iron core recharged the U shape magnet. Then it became normal again and ready for the next start. During the recharging the new supply of magnets came from the air or the earths magnetic field."

Turion, I think you're heading in the right direction regarding the wheel magnets flipping the poles of the coils.
I think it might be on pages 25-26, ring the bell twice with one motion and no current. It deals with making a magnet out of a non current induced coil and changing the polarity of the coils while the magnets approach and leave the coils.

Crude is not a problem now put the 12 poles around the wheel, add a steel plate behind the magnets and you have it. ED said what it was if you read the magnetic current book, towards the end where he is explaining AC and how it's made. He did not need anything like batteries and did not even need magnets.
I have a generator that generates currents on a small scale from the air without using any magnets around it.
Why did ED say this because he gave the machine in the book if you understand the wire is really split in two unless you add current then they wind together.
Read it for yourself.

I wasn't thinking of the magnets changing the polarity, I was thinking of copper sections around the outside of the wheel. If there were (alternately) positive and negative sections, and brushes attached to one set of coils on the electromagnet, the rotation of the wheel would change the polarity of the electromagnet as the wheel spins. We know it only takes a split second of current to change polarity. It would cause the coil to be alternately attracted to and repelled by the V shaped magnets. This isn't what ED did I know, but it is an interesting idea. I'm not sure I know exactly how to make the magnets change the polarity without current. Guess I will have to do some more reading.

I am REALLY unclear on this part. The only way I could picture it in my head was a bifilar coil, with one part acting as the electromagnet and the other part generating the electricityl The electromagnet would switch polarity as the rotor turns, which would attract and repel the V shaped magnets. Am I close?

Thanks JB for filling us in. I'm kicking myself for not thinking about the steel plate you had on the backside of the magnets... making them all U magnets. But then again, that's why I'm in Marketing and you do what you do. I won't be quitting my day job any time soon.
But, it's fun to think and build this stuff. So, thank you. I'll be putting this together and see about making it run... the 12 super pole wheel, a PMH and then see what I see.
@ Turion, it's all in the Leedskalnin's book. I've now read it eight times and I still find new things in it that I missed before... give it several reads.
