Orangish / brownish gunk is iron oxide.
Some from water source if tap water if high iron.
Most is from oxygen attacking metal of annode (positive tube) and causing breakdown of the metal freeing up the iron to be oxidized. That is the orange / brownish gunk that will float on top of water.
With insulation of annode, not a problem. Passivating the annode 'possibly' may help prevent that.
Also 'may' be function of too much current causing this process to happen so more voltage potential may prevent this breakdown.
