      This video was posted Dec 8, 2008.

      Daniel Nocera and Matthew Kanan discover a new catalyst that speeds up the splitting of water into oxygen and hydrogen.

      This video offers more insight into the discovery compared to the lecture style video that Nocera normally gives related to this discovery.

        Tnx Indiana,
        What I got out of the video was Mathew Kanan:
        Somewhat simular to Nocera,
        Mathew Kanan who now teaches at Stanford, Basicly disolves cobalt phosphate in water.
        The cobalt and phosphate buffer spontaneously plate as a catalyst electrode significantly
        lowering the electrolysis current. This is an improvement over nickel oxide which reacted
        with many things forming carbonates, the hydrogen electrode would use platinum.
        When the power is turned off Kanan's cobalt phosphate goes back into solution.
        Other than keeping the concentration levels in order the process is simple and fairly clean.
        Kanan goes on to remind us that if we store H and O efficiently and ecologically his electrolyser
        would make a good compliment to a solar array when the sun does'nt shine.

          Maybe combining what Professor Nate Lewis at California Institute of Technology created called Silicon Nanorod Structures with what Nocera's team has located may do the trick.

          This process is looking for an inexpensive catalyst.

          This is 1 hour and 31 minutes long. He does update his talk so maybe you will hear some useful gems in this latest version. Old versions are valuable too as he may let out information in his excitement to communicate the discovery.

          You will also hear Nocera speak of the lengths they have gone to in order to protect/patent this discovery - 16 patent lawyers working 6 months along with a top patent judge to pick it apart and seal any "leaks" in the patent.


          Nature has given us a blueprint to model and benefit from.
          Lets figure out how to do it from a grassroots level!
