I'm trying to post simple ones with few moving parts.

The Bourke reminds me of the flat 4 VW engine with the exception of the common journals for the opposed pistons. The problem I see with it is that the center bearing surfaces will have a lot of wear compared to a captured circular shaft/bearing arrangement. There's likely to be longevity problems with the design; even with modern materials...

From talking with friends who've owned Mazda's with the Wankel is that it's not a very fuel efficient engine in production form. Very powerful and high revving but not that fuel efficient. While water and air would be about as cheap a fuel as you can get, I don't know that it would do as many miles per fuel load as other comparable sized engines.

Well, there's always the MYT (mighty yet tiny) engine of Raphial Morgando.

It appears to be well along in development now.

I remember last year Sterling was coyly alluding to something Mr. Morgando told him privately, about it being "OU" when using compressed air to turn it over instead of burning fuel... Supposedly it must have been efficient enough to run a compressor and "loop", if this was what he meant.

But the inventor has never claimed this publicly (lol wise i think)

I thougt about the MYT but it is so complex as far as construction.
I saw the interview and the inventor definitely alluded to gains.

Crankshaft Motion

Wasted motion robs power.
A typical engine's crank is powered for at most 120 degrees out of every 720 degrees of rotation — only part of each third cycle.
The crankshaft's motion is out of balance and unsynchronized. When you have pressure, there is little leverage. And by the time you have leverage there is very little power.

Our engine applies power directly to rotation.
The Circle 18SM uses a roller cam instead of a crankshaft. Six pistons fire every 10 degrees of rotation. Each of the 18 pistons fires 12 times in a full 360 degree rotation. This results in a much steadier torque.
The engine's forces are balanced. Pistons are equal and opposed. The wave form of the cam transfers the force efficiently.

As it seems now, we are still to be using ICE engines into the future. No new and revolutionary technological advances in engines are to be forthcoming in the near future. We are stuck with the staus quo. In this realm of thinking, I am poised to start a new thread outlining some of the pitfalls and needed improvements in our attempt to resurect the ICE from it's poor efficiencies. Major automotive manufacturers are determined to continue the ICE under all circumstances, no matter what fuel is burned in them in the future. Although only 25-30% efficient in their overall operation, it is not that they can not be updated to perform at much higher efficiencies with minor design parameters incorporated into their operating systems. It is into this realm of possibilities that I intend to explore and bring the ICE into a new dimention of operating potential. I would hope that I will get some help with this projected new outfitting as it will be a big undertaking to redesign the parameters of the ICE.
Although theoretical, working with other forum members here, I think we could develope a new ICE, we could all live with. Good Luck. Stealth

I had a 1969 Mazda R100 rotary. It was not very good on gas in town, but on the highway it got close to 40 miles to the gallon (imp) driving 65 mph. This was way better than my 1971 VW Superbeetle at the time which only got around 32 mpg (imp). Some of the RX3's were not that good on gas. But
they did improve them somewhat in later years. From talking to an owner, the RX8 is not that good either unless you take it easy. I think that rotary's
could be designed for better fuel efficiency than they have been so far.

Rotary's also have issues with piston seal wear. The engine in the RX8 is much better than past design's, so I have heard, but it is still one of the weak links in the Wankel design.

OPRE Engine

Just came across this engine today, the Pattakon OPRE diesel engine. The inventor claims that the 500 cc engine weighs 20 Kg but is able to produce 50 kw @ 6000 rpm. If the engine weighs and produces as much power as the inventor claims then it would be great to use in a lightweight single seat vehicle.
