  • A Shout Out From The DownTown Underground!

I have been playing with Water Cells and Solar Yard Lights. I'll link a Pic of a carbon block filter and magnesium cell running 4 AAA & 1AA solar yardlights. See pics in a latter post. Thanks To All who are sharing their research freely with the world!

      AquaLuma:
Your set up looks interesting. Are all the leds being run off of one water filter carbon element, with Mg wire or ribbon loosely wrapped around it? What are you getting as far as voltage and current readings?

Carbon Block With Magnesium Ribbon Running 5 Yard Lights

        @ NickZ
        Hi,
Yes a Single Carbon Block ran all 5.

I have wrapped the Magnesium as tight as I can do it with Hand pressure. I found that 3/8ths to 1/2 inch spacing worked better than 1/8 or less.

The Dry Voltage was . 81v and wet was 1.77v. This was using 32oz. of distilled water with 1/4 tspn of alum and 1/2 table spoon of borax.
I didn't do a current reading on this setup. I just see how many lights I can get to light. I ran out of lights on this one. I did try to run my Fuji off of it and run a CFL, but It failed to light it. So not as much current as a standard NiCad AA.

It's amazing how little current these 2 dollar solar yard lights take! Super efficient! I'll Be posting videos with links here soon.

        Thanks For The Questions,

I'm wondering if more than one coil is wound and placed in series on the same carbon filter element if more volts may be obtained. I have done that on a copper pipe and got 4 volts.
So, you are lighting 5 garden light leds off of the one cell that has 1.8 volts, and an unknown amount of current? That's pretty good!
Here is a picture of two different cells in series, I was just playing with them, seeing how it combines with other cells. I use aluminum wire instead of Mg ribbon as it last a long time. I don't notice any sulfate on the wire yet. There were two wraps of wire on the carbon, one above the other one. I was just playing around with it, but the wire loosened up on me.

            I Like It

            @NickZ
Great Idea. using multiple taps! Try running single wires the length of your unit rather than wrapping it. I have found you don't need to coil the wire or ribbon in order for it to work. You could get more taps that way. If I was around the lab, I would give it ago.
I have been playing around with copper pipe and Magnesium ribbon, And get very good results with that too.
I Use a Large Tie Wrap to hold the Cotton(or other substrate) aswellas Wire or ribbon in place, Then wrap it and use one tie wrap to Lock it in place when you get to the end.
I have found that if you keep 1/2 in from the end of your wire or ribbon and the end of your cotton (or other substrate) to be an optimal distance.
Large Wire Ties Or Tie Wraps can be found at Hardware or Auto Parts Stores. If you're carefull you can use a small eyeglass screwdriver to depress the small tab that locks the tie wrap and you can re use the tie wrap several times.
This particular carbon block in the photo has been rebuilt 4 times and still funtions as good as it did the first time.
I recently have thought to use Velcro to hold it together, But I haven't tried it yet.
