A grassroots movement of resistance is sweeping the country. More than 100,000 people have used the VoteNoBailout.org website to send a letter to Congress telling them to vote "No" to the bailout legislation.

The Bush administration and the richest bankers in the country, with support of some of the top leaders in Congress, have put a gun to our head: give us your money, or we will sink your economy. Yesterday, Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, threatened the Senate if they failed to pass the $700 billion plan, they would be responsible for causing recession, more joblessness, and pushing more homes into foreclosure.

The bailout package takes our money and gives it to the same bankers and executives who drove the economy into the ground. The pay for chief executives of large U.S. companies is now at 275 times that of the average worker's salary in 2007. It was 25 times greater in 1965. The same bankers who will be given our hard-earned tax dollars refuse to support even the bailout of their own institutions if their obscene salaries are even slightly compromised. "We support the bill, but we are opposed to provisions on executive pay... It is not appropriate for government to be setting the salaries of executives," said Scott Talbot, executive for Financial Services Roundtable, a group representing the bankers.

I also voted no as soon as I saw this post. And I was happy to see on ABC World News Tonight a report that spoke of how the offices of our elected officials are being flooded with phone calls from angry taxpayers who are in GREAT opposition to this "legislation". And now old Georgie W. Bush plans on delivering a little speech tonight to his "Fellow Americans"... I think I'll pass on that one...

According to the US Census, the population in America is 305,247,401. If you really wanted to stimulate the economy, Give every taxpayer in America $1 Million dollars to pay-off debt and go shopping, this would definitely stimulate the economy as well as swell the coffers of those financial institutions.

Why don't we matter as much as Washington's Corporate buddies?

The cost would be less than HALF of the bail out plan proposed and have much greater effect on the economy and the financial institutions, not to mention President Bush's standing in public opinion.

Clarification on billion

"According to the French and American method of numeration, a thousand millions, or 1,000,000,000; according to the English method, a million millions, or 1,000,000,000,000." -- Definition of Billion

I am not at all certain which definition of billion is involved with this proposed plan.
In (1)billion (million million) the amount would be 700 000 000 000 000 *Whew!!!*
and
(2)billion (thousand million) it would be 700 000 000 000 dollars.

I think Ingram your stats on the tax payback idea rests on the definition of billion as being (1) above. With the lesser (2) billion, 700 billion would still be equal to each American taxpayer getting 20 000 dollars if that amount was used in the pay-off debt tax break instead of the bail-out the stinking rich dudes proposal . P.S I need to become a banker

Don't worry about the math, anyone could make a mistake dealing with those numbers. I saw an article where they had the done math with more accurate figures(exact population, etc.) It came out to $26,000 each. I'd like to receive it, but that wouldn't save the bankers, would it. Wonder which choice the Congress will go with?

As usual, they didn't listen to us, so I thought this article was pretty timely and right on the mark.

Howdy Y'all,
I think this is the most accurate and concise statement of why we are in the mess that we are in. However, the solution is not quite as simple as the writer suggests. We should begin with term limits and set as a standard that, when term limits go into effect, all incumbents would stand for re-election at the end of their current term.

545 PEOPLE

"Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don' t propose a federal budget. The president does.

You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations.

The House of Representatives does.

You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't ca re if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gal l of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.

If the Marines are in IRAQ , it's because they want them in IRAQ .

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!"
