I went ahead,

and ordered one of the hand-operated clay pigeon throwers, $20 from Cabelas.
Turns out it throws a 4 1/2" diameter disk, and DVD/Cd's are a little bigger than that, so I would have to find a way to (make a 'jig' to) cut them down a little. or, find something else thats cheap and plentiful, and is already 4 1/2' in diameter. Something to 'play' with, anyway,...

On the topic, it may be worth noting; Mak Twain is generally thought of as a very perceptive person, and i read some material indicating he thought the same things we've been expressing; he thought "Civilisation" was DOOMED, and couldn't possibly last another 50 years. Eventually, it seems to me, it MUST collapse, but WHEN? It could be in our lifetime, but it COULD continue stumbling along for 3-5 more generations. And, (my thought) IF survivors of the 'collapse' aspire to 'have things be like they were', and so tried to re-build a civilisation based on the same flawed premises, it will simply be a case of history repeating itself. Round balls fly ok but odd shaped rocks fly however they like, no two fly the
same. A simple bow and arrow is far more accurate, the ammunition is
reusable if not broken or lost. Bows and arrows can be made from trees or
other materials and strings from animals or maybe some plant materials "maybe".

If hunting for food one would want some consistency in the projectiles flight.

I now have two bows a recurve bow and a compound bow with sights which
is very accurate, I've designed some prop type vermin attachments which will
help arrow rotation for accuracy and give more impact rather than through
penetration on small game.

When a couple of other parts become available I will make a video to show
the simple prop type small game head for use under a field point, as well as
some other things with the bows.

The next step for me is to actually make some long bows and arrows from
trees. feathers and raw steel/iron or stone.

There are some interesting new designs on the slingshot channel. I, myself, have designed my own and have almost got it nearly finished. It has taken a while to design and rework it as some problems arose. The main problem with slingshots are that the rubbers will break and or dry rot after a while. Mine uses no rubbers and everything is built to last and also is replaceable, if need be. It can be disassembled without tools and can even be repaired with wood carved from trees. Also it has a rest for shooting an arrow and a string spool on the front for bow fishing. Whether shooting rocks, marbles, lead or steel ball and, of course, arrows, it really is an all around sling/bow. Good Luck. stealth

[Turion]

When I was a kid, we made slingshots using a long piece of pipe. The bands were attached to the inside of the pipe about a fourth of the way back (through holes drilled in the side of the pipe.) There was a strap attached to the center of the band used to draw it back tightly, and it was loaded by dropping the projectile down the barrel. One person loaded and drew back on the strap while a second person aimed the shouldered weapon, which we called our Bazooka. The energy of the band was pretty much expended before it got to the front of the barrel, so nothing but the projectile came out the front, and the strap would emerge from the rear end of the tube by holding it on end and shaking it a bit.

I am reminded

Of a scene from "Jeremiah Johnson". Redford is getting ready to shoot a bird in a bush, and his Indian wife stops him with a gesture. She throws a rock, and stuns or kills the bird.
Take your pipe slingshot, and replace the bands with a spring; the 'drawstring' runs down the center of the spring. And, on the front end of the spring, is a solid end with a bolt thru it, that passes thru a slot cut on each side of the tube, with a 90 degree turn at the back end. You cock it, by pulling on the drawstring, back to where you can turn this bolt, to hold it in the cocked position, until you release it. Oil the spring, and have spares, should last a long time. Could shoot arrows, balls, rocks even.Jim

All great designs

All these designs are an upgrade to the lowly slingshot, even as our rubber banded slingshots are an upgrade to the ones listed in the bible in the old testament. Those really required lots of practice to master, maybe years. The ones now can be mastered in a few hours of practice. With more modern designs less practice is required and more accuracy is obtained as well as higher velocities and more knock down power(foot pounds of energy). The larger the projectile and the faster it flies the more energy it releases upon impact. One problem with rubbers and springs is that most of their stored energy is released at the beginning and slowly dissipates as it returns to its normal state of rest. This is typical of slingshots, bows, crossbows and all other kinetic energy mechanisms but one. It is precisely this mechanism that is employed in my design. I haven't finished it yet but when I do, I will report on its performance to anyone interested. I set out to build the worlds most powerful slingshot. Whether I succeeded or not, time will tell. Good Luck. stealth

I finally finished my prototype and tested it. It does OK, but I still need to do some more work on it. It seems that what works well on paper-er--cad, doesn't always work the same in practice. With a few more modifications though, I think this should be one awesome weapon for hunting/survival or just for plinking around the house. Anyone who practiced some with a slingshot can become proficient enough to hunt small game with them, and in a survival situation, that may be just enough to insure your survival. A slingshot should be considered standard equipment in any backpack or bugout bag. Even if the rubbers break, dryrot or lose their tension, it still is a viable weapon for small game hunting and even protection form larger animals. With their light weight, and small folding size, it makes perfect sense to have one, at least for a backup weapon. Good luck. stealth

I've got a slingshot and two sets of rubbers, there is a guy on the you tube that
uses a key ring held between the bars of the slingshot with rubber bands and
uses that as an arrow rest to shoot arrows with a slingshot.

The slingshot in this video has a similar arrangement for the arrow rest. I can't
find the other video, he went commercial..

Black Scout Reviews - Survival Slingshot - YouTube

I'm going to try modding my slingshot to shoot arrows. I'll use the
rubber band and large metal key ring "ring" mounted between the bars, as well
as use a string as shown in this video below.

Watch from 10:12 minutes on wards to see the string in the slug pocket for
the arrow, doing so would allow the use of a release aid like for a compound
bow ans so the bands could be as strong as you could get, (no slipping or finger damage).

String trick with sling arrow. watch from 10:12 mins.
SlingBow DVD - YouTube

I've got my compound bow setup and getting it sighted in with effectively
three ways to aim it, the regular peep, and as well as through the peep or
without it even, I can align a rear pin (which I added) with a front pin so as
to get better consistency. The pin to pin is actually more accurate than the
peep and pin method, but I like the peep because it allows me to look through
the string rather than beside it. Then I also have the red dot laser sight which
is point and shoot, it is below the arrow so I have it sighted to be straight so
that at 30 yards or so the arrow drops through the laser line. I've got some
wooden arrows with feathers now for the recurve bow (regular type bow)
so those arrows will work in the slingshot arrow firing setup, they weigh 620
grains or about 40 grams is all and are 31.5 inches long, not cheap even
though low quality from china.

Here are some video clips of my compound bow with aluminium and carbon
arrows, I always fire the three aluminium cammo arrows first then the two
carbon arrows. Also some pictures of my "modded" bow and some special very
cheap and very nasty small game "prop cutter heads" I call them.

When I'm shooting the arrows one after the other I'm picking them up off the
ground it would be a lot quicker if I used a quiver. Camera came a bit loose.
First shot I tried not to look through the peep and so I had no anchor for my
draw hand which ruined the shot. No excuse just a reason.

With the other four shots I'm gonna say I "walked them up" so as not to hit
another arrow . The bow has a skinny handle so it's a bit wobbly to use
it needs a glove used or something wrapped around the handle to make it
bigger, i might strap it with some leather and yarn.

From 13 yards and also low light.

From 18 yards

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI83DeKe0t8

The leather cover is for the laser for safety, it's a 55 pound bow, not a bad tool, but complex.

These attachments I made to go under regular field tips, like bought ones for
small game but better. I will be testing these on some melons and pumpkins
soon I hope, and with a close regular video camera from the side. I'll compare
them to some other broad heads and points.

I have wood set aside to make arrows and longbows, as it turns out I have a
star apple tree log or two, as well as an oak trunk, a big one that needs
splitting. If it splits good I could get up to 8 bows out of it up to 8 feet long
or more if I wanted to I'll go for 7 feet long strung.

I like the sling arrow idea but it still requires rubber bands.

Cheers

[Farmhand]

Well actually with the ring between the slingshot arms my concern is that the
pouch and bands are stopped prematurely by the ring, usually when a sling shot
is fired it turns the bands inside out through the fork.

So i came up with a quick prototype which might even be too weak to work, but
the principal is that the arrow rest cannot fold back when the arrow is drawn
and it takes the correct amount of force to spin it out of the way. Different
materials could be used such as hard plastic or another idea I have too difficult
to explain, if it works do it.

Anyway the point is that when the arrow if loosed the bands can fly through
past the rest because the rest will fold down and allow it.

A Whisker biscuit would stop the bands and pouch dead at the bars.

Wd40

The main 'drawback' of slingshots, i.e. the rubber 'rotting' over time, is/will be a problem, if/when SHTF, cause rubber is a really handy stuff, thats 'manufactured'.
Lots of things are made with or use rubber, and will similarly 'rot' over time. I don't know the chemistry, but I have several times 're-constituted' something that was made out of rubber, and seemed to have 'lost it', that is had all sorts of surface cracks, soft/squishy, and even deformed.
I just soak or saturate the thing with WD40, and wait a day or so. The rubber comes out looking 'like new'. So, since rubber is so ubiquitous, I'm thinking a can of WD40, NOT the aerosol, might be a good thing to have.
This may also work with some types of plastics, not sure.

Still like the idea of an air-gun; Friend of mine was telling me lewis and Clark carried a couple with them, on their expedition; operating pressure was something like 1500-3000 psi (?), and would throw a 1/2" (40-50 cal.) lead ball several 100 yards, with deadly force and accuracy. Apperently they pumped it up by hand, and used leather for the "O" rings.

Would love to know more about the actual design. Also saw 1 or 2 references to air-powered 'sniper' rifles, but haven't been able to find any details.Jim

work in progress

I finished my air rifle and it works great, but still may make a few improvements as time goes along. Both of my slingshot designs are coming along slowly. Weather has been bad here and have not worked on them in over a week. Today I hopefully will get back to work on them and try to finish, at least one of them and test them in a day or so. I am reluctant to post pictures of them until I have tested them and made sure they work as well as I designed them. Both designs are radically different from the pocket rockets sold in stores. I have gone away from most of the forked designs on the market and have completely redesigned the handle and hold on them. I am attempting make them very ergonomic for more comfortable holding and shooting. They are both going to be powered by fiberglass prods(similar to crossbow), but much shorter and smaller. Still, they should have lots of power, more so than rubbers, and they should last many years and can even be replaceable in the field, with a carved wood prod, if need be. Will post pictures when completed and tested. Good Luck. stealth

Wow here's a test at night using a headset on low so I could see my way around
then I turn on the tac light aim up on the target and the light beam itself is
almost small enough the use for aiming in general, the laser and other sights
just make it easier, on the shot in the video I forgot to turn on the front sight
"blacklight" to illuminate the pins so it was all laser aim on that one and I
managed to put the arrow right next to the first one I shot beforehand.

Night time laser and tactical light test with mounted camera.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj50xZYwEWg

Don't be a burgler or a wild dog around my paddocks in the night anymore, the
light would be on you but the laser only need be turned on for a second or so to
check and adjust aim then bam. Difficult to hide from those tac lights, I have an
even stronger focusable one on the way to hold for spotting. I also have a
very cheap single function on/off tac light but the beam is not a focusing
beam it a spreading beam. I like the focusing beam because it can blind the
offender outright, they would be looking at the dim head lamp then get hit
with the strong focused beam of the tac light so they would likely not even
see the red dot. If I kept talking they would not know what hit them at night.
Zombies beware.

An arrow with a field point could do very little damage to a target and unless
it passes right through it plugs it's own hole, but a cutter or a broad head are
a different story altogether they are very dangerous even to carry around, if
one was to fall on a handful of sharp broad heads nock down, like falling on a
sword it would be goodnight Irene.

Stay safe, play safe, think twice, then compare thoughts if they don't agree think again.

Cheers

P.S. They wonder why we get the idea it aint gonna be all beer and skittles for much longer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYkl3XlEneA

The guy in the video impresses me because of his matter of fact way, and he is looking at most points from a logical perspective.
Cause and effect. Everything is back to front and upside down, inside out.

When the dollar value of the food alone that Fema and DHS are stockpiling for
them not everyone else, then we consider other costs like ammo and
ancillaries it is easy to see where a lot of the tax dollars are going, it's called
underground. We are the workers stocking the lair and paying for it with blood
sweat and tears, but the Lair has no room for us and never did.

The words preemptive actions or inactions come to mind.

Cheers

[Farmhand]

There is a problem with the slingshot string through the slug pocket holes for the arrow the way it
shows in the picture, the effect is that when the arrow is loosed the string and
arrow nock stay still until the slug pocket moves the almost 1 inch before it
begins to push on the arrow nock.

I have another idea to use a stiff string vertically in the slug pocket so that the
arrow nock is already initially hard in the slug pocket. Either that or I need to
punch two holes in the slug pocket at the right place so as tho allow the nock
to be on the string but hard up on the slug pocket.

I also have another simpler more practical idea for the arrow rest.

Cheers
