Paul's Joule Thief Charger----My Replication

Hi all

This is my first post here, but I have been asked to post a circuit from one of my Youtube Videos and thought I could Post It Here as it uses a coil that is in resonance.

I am currently testing the circuit and it ran for 18 Hours Charging the second battery and now Im swapping the batteries over to see if we can reclaim any of those 18 Hours. I find this circuit really interesting because it produces Light and charges the battery......

Any Ideas are welcome, or If I made any obvious mistakes on the sketch...

Paul I think that this Joule Thief circuit makes a really good simple charger!! I did it a little different than you but the idea is the same.

Yo! Lid! Can you tell me if any of your chargers will charge a battery that will run a motor? Non of the chargers I've done so far will, Bedini, Imhotep, or whatever. They all light lights but non will turn a motor.

Problem solved, it is a glitch in my scope scanning, when the peak voltage goes just that little bit higher, the scope switches to a faster scan time.

Joule Thief charging a cap and running a pulse motor

Yo! Lid! Can you tell me if any of your chargers will charge a battery that will run a motor? Non of the chargers I've done so far will, Bedini, Imhotep, or whatever. They all light lights but non will turn a motor.

I found this video on Youtube of a guy using a joule thief to charge a large cap and then using the stored up energy to run a simple pulse motor. I found the video interesting because the source battery is just one AA and the cap that is running the motor is at a higher voltage that is climbing.
I know that this is just taking energy from one place to another and then releasing it in a different way (higher voltage / lower current) but it is fun to watch and play with. Joules of energy are joules of energy --- is up to us smart people to "steal" every last bit of it and use it wisely.

Yes it is pretty much a DC-DC converter that make the most out of a small battery. You do get them in white LED torch.

You can have high voltage and high current then use that to power a big motor briefly. Problem is, it will take a while for the circuit to acheive that. Think of it as a camera flash, where a small battey is used to charge up a big cap then dicharge in the flash. Notice you will have to wait for it to charge up before you can use the flash again. Wait 5 seconds and its gone in almost an instant, its still the same amount of energy there.

It would only be a break through if the AA battery + circuit is able to pump out more energy than if the battery alone is used.

Why don't they sell "Flashlight Chargers"

@ Chris--- you are right there isn't anything really special going on here in the 'joule thief' except that we are making light at the same time that we are charging up something. The last time that I checked the flashlights for sale in Wal Mart, I couldn't find any that would charge up a higher voltage battery than was in it-- while it was running. Sure it is going to cost you energy to do that but maybe there is a need for such a device.

Cheers, the tests look promising though as the first battery too 18h:30m to discharge and the second battery too 22h:45m So I am Repeating the tests until the led wont light to get an idea of how much time the circuit gains

I have a couple on new ideas of new ideas too, so more to come

@ Jonnydarvo-- Hi ! I have been studying your videos. You are a great inspiration to me. When I watched your video this morning of you charging the 9v battery and after following Paul's recent videos---I am totally sold. We really need to pursue the 'Joule Thief'. I tried to get my circuit to run a low voltage Bedini SSG today like you showed-- but failed. I need to scale up the circuit a bit.

@ Kubikop-----Paul this thing works qreat!! I have been meaning to make one of these for quite awhile but when I saw you running it on the little lemon batteries ---that was it. I made a video of the scope wave form coming off the collector of the 2n2222 and also the sound that the 'thief' makes. I am running duration tests now using just the 2 AAs.

Waveform characteristics

@Lidmotor: Very interesting,
the "voice" of the thief sounds like a Low Frequency Oscillator modulating another waveform when you turn the pot. So maybe the "strength" of the joule thief lies in a more complex (modulated) pulse-waveform going to the coil? Just a thought.

@Lidmotor.Thanks I too have enjoyed your work and how you explain things,you have helped me and others alot.
Regarding your joule thief bedini,i have not tried it with a Bedini yet,my motor is a simple 4 magnet reed switch pulse motor,did you see my circuit?Two things are really important to get it working good
1.Use fast rectifying diodes.1N 4937 works great.I tried various diodes and this one gave me high voltage output.
2.use more than 1 white led.The voltage goes up as you add them.When i disconnect my led ceiling light which has 24 leds my motor slows and voltage to cap drops
3 Regarding the capasistor,I have used a 4700uf 35v and it worked ok.You don't need a massive one (mine is 60000uf)but bigger is better in this case.
4.The magnets i used are N42 25x5x5 neo's and these work really well.I forgot to put magnet type on circuit.These work really well and make the motor almost self starting.
Points 1 and 2 are the important ones.I hope you get it going.
Here is something you may find interesting.my rotor sits on a small dc motor as a bearing and when it is being spun by the coil,this motor is acting as a dc generator so i decided to see if i could run another completly seperate joule thief and it does.Here is a pic.I will also try and feed this output back to the run battery but will have to get a germanium diode first.

Hi Luc and others. I have been slowly plodding away at a Tesla coil build. Made some progress today, forming the primary coil. It has 10 turns of 1/4 inch copper pipe in a conical form, was hard to wind it perfectly so some minor kinks and warps to fix yet. I have enough left to wind some different style primaries too.

The Properties of my secondary are as follows.

100mm PVC form, approx 800 turns of 0.53 gauge. 18.4 ohms, 7.69mH (Not the secondary pictured).

I will try some experiments on this one seen below, using an ignition coil to step up voltage to fill the cap of the primary LC. Also some experiments with a tighter coupled helical primary, using Luc's Polarity flipping circuit at lower voltages.

I'm building one myself, though I must admit, I gave my own links a cursory glance before deciding it would be less fun to 'read the instructions first' - at the moment I'm just waiting for the glue to dry overnight :-)
