Heating and squishing microalgae in a pressure-cooker could be the fastest way to turn it into a crude bio-oil.

Principal investigator Phillip Savage and colleagues at the University of Michigan are using the pressure-cooker method to replace the conventional technique that extracts the oil after drying special, oily types of algae.

The hydrothermal process overcame two major barriers to large-scale conversion of microalgae to liquid fuels by using less-oily types of algae and avoiding the need to dry it.

"We make an algae soup," Savage said. "We heat it to about 300oC and keep the water at high enough pressure to keep it liquid as opposed to steam. We cook it for 30 minutes to an hour and we get a crude bio-oil."

The high temperature and pressure allow the algae to react with the water and break down because they don't have tough cell walls. This leads to the release of oil along with decomposed proteins and carbohydrates, which add to the fuel yield.

"We're trying to do what nature does when it creates oil, but we don't want to wait millions of years," Savage said.

the tax applyed on the used cooking oil source bio-diesel, is the same as the applyed to diesel oil in your country?

it should not match the prices because petrol is new sorce, and vebetable oil is used source... that is sadly...

It is true but, still we can save a lot of fuel by the source of cooking oil but, the only thing we have to do is to save the vegetable oil instead of consume it.

You are right Juju, the meaning of consuming the vegetable oil is to save it that is in terms of bio diesel like, see in Asian countries most of people are using vegetable oil for many purpose not only for cooking and they use plain oil that is the raw oil for many purpose and after that they throw it away so, to clear that I said, we have to consume it instead of throwing it away.

I think, now I clear my point to you....

we are almost completely trowing out a source of bio fuel that can save 1 month pollution every year if it was recycled!

One month I think every month!!. People get aware of recycling now but, before people are just throwing everything whether it is a plastic can or anything and that actually results in increasing pollution.

I think we have to first think about not using garbage bags that are still in use and should find out some better alternative for that which will be worth for avoiding pollution.
