Something else that I mentioned in another earlier post relates to professional test results of the Griggs pump. Jed Rothwell conducted a detailed engineering investigation of the device in January 1994, and reported the following: "During one of the demonstrations we watched, over a 20 minute period, 4.80 Kilowatt Hours of electricity was input, and 19,050 BTUs of heat evolved..."
At that rate, you would have roughly 57,000 BTU's per hour. My oil fired boiler is rated at 100,000 BTU's, and when the temperature here drops near zero the burner runs almost continously. So 57,000 BTU's wouldn't do the job. I would need a pump with nearly twice the capacity, which would of course require an even larger drive motor that uses way more electricity.

I was thinking about this and, I was thinking about using a racing car rotor made with holes in them to dissapate the heat and brake pads or anything really to generate the friction.

It just came to mind seeing red hot rotors on race cars. I just wonder how long the break pads would last under that kinda abuse so some other material may need to be used.

After contacting the seller these plans are NOT for the Pritchard steam engine but for a steam engine known as the Bolsover. I was under the impression that with the inclusion of the information on the Pritchard steam car and the mentioning of people who worked at RMIT, which is where Pritchard taught at, that this auction was for plans for the Pritchard steam engine. I apologise for misforming everyone.

A simple question to Rickoff

First Rick thanks for all the info so far, and Id like to know if some as experimented with a smaller scale version of it? I am building a small house next summer and Id like to build one prior, smaller then the one ive seen so far. I would just like to know if its worth it or not?

While no one has of yet posted photos of a completed small scale experimental model, I am hoping that some people have taken this strongly suggested alternative, which I have proposed several times herein, to completion. Doing so would be well worth your while, and many of us here would be appreciative of you sharing your plans and progress in such an endeavor. You can start by searching for the posts where I talked about scaled down builds, and offered some ideas for scale builders. Surely anything that can be done with a full scale replication can also be accomplished on a much smaller scale, and a small replication allows for reduced costs and reduced build time, in addition to ease of alterations when testing changes which you assume will improve performance.

Rick, Frankly, I am posting this, in part, to get it moved up from page 12.Lot of new members may not of seen this, or even older members, and its such a neat concept.
On the scaled down model, I once learned a valuable lesson, from a woodcarving friend of mine.He did all sorts of carvings, and sold them from his front lawn.1 'good seller was a 7' tall 'tiki-god' he usually carved out of palm tree 'wood'. So people could use it to have Tahiti theme pool parties, etc.
Anyway, his landlord gave him a piece of 2"x2" by 2' walnut, and asked him to carve it into a scaled down version. Said he would take it in exchange for 1 months rent ($150.00). Needless to say, this was years ago. I think he sold the full size models for, like $350.00.
He figured this would be an easy way to pay the rent.When he was finally done, he figured the hours he had in it, it 'cost' him about $750-$1000.
It wasn't mainly the difference in working Walnut vs. Palm wood, he had allowed for that.It was just that all the detail, scaled down, was much more time consuming.May not apply to this project, but ever since I had the rare opportunity to learn from someone else's mistake, I try not to assume that making something 'scaled down' will always mean it is less time consumiing or expensive.Well, hopefully this post will move this thread up front, where maybe some more people will get a chance to see it.;-)

I followed that link and read into a thread where a fellow had, basically no success. Did I need to go back and read the rest of the thread? It sort of shortstopped me.

I really have to wonder about the life of the motor under these conditions, just watching the guy operate it - seems like exactly what you would not want to do to an electric motor!

I am also curious about the heat. And debris. One thing I have learned about steam/heat - where theres smoke, there is not always fire.

My experience with HHO has taught me that. For months I struggle with my electrolyser "producing steam" yet my temps weren't up. Turns out it wasn't steam at full temperature and certainly not under the pressure you'd associate with steam. Kind of like when the lake "steams" - there's no heat there either, or pressure. Looks can be deceiving. Although, the video did seem to display some pressure. After watching my friends machine run, though, I got an entirely new impression and appreciation for just how much steam under pressure even a 1 hp engine needs.

Hey guys I'm wanting to give this system a go but I have a few questions.

1. Where is a good place to get a roller like he has only smaller?
2. What material is the roller? I think it's stainless steel but not 100% sure
3. Do you guys think an old top loading washing machine might be a workable base for the build? I know I'd have to seriously alter it but would it be a good starting point?

this is an excellent idea, but how efficient is it?

We know that at first, he was using a 1HP motor, but do we know how much energy he was using? Let's just assume 1 kWh per hour.

Has anyone measured the heat output? I think I saw somewhere a test result from the horizontal roller, something in the 150kBTU per hour range.

If that is true, then the unit outputs 50 units of energy for 1 unit of energy in.

This is highly suspect, otherwise everyone would heat their boilers and houses this way.

We need a heat out figure to determine how much energy is input vs the output.
